I think it's crazy how little we know about the PHM crew. What do you mean NASA launched three unknown astronauts into space? Is anyone making a documentary or interviewing their families? We got over these people WAY too quickly…

According to a NASA X post from a while ago, Grace just doesn't have any family. Pretty sure that Ilyukhina's family aren't active online and Li-Jie had explicity requested privacy.

ryland used to drink A LOT before he became a teacher. he pretty much quit once he started working as a middle school teacher though

Posted on BlueSky a while ago but I thought I'd just go and clarify whatever I could on Reddit (co-written by lovely wife Jody Moreno (who directed Metalstorm GO WATCH IT) and Katya Ilyukhina (olesya's sister))
ok here we go.
so NASA incorrectly said that Ryland had no family remaining! this was a mistake! i am his real, very alive, twin brother.
The reason I think this error happened is because of two major factors being 1, we are adopted into separate families and took the surname of our family, and 2, the court case that surrounded us, and i guess a third unhelpful factor which is that ryland went full no contact with his parents.
so first of all it is very important for any person to note that me and ryland were adopted and raised on opposite sides of the country (i stayed in florida, he moved to california) and this meant we were out of contact for a while before i was doing stunts and he was studying in california. i don't really know tons about him as a teenager but i do know him very well as an adult and we had a close relationship after. we took the surnames of our family because of insistence from our older brother (court gentry, who is dead - dying in prison)
i'm going to talk about the court case involved with us at length because i think the transparency would be nice for ryland's legacy and knowing where he came from. i have no idea about NDAs but i cant find anything on this online so i assume all evidence it ever happened was wiped entirely from experience.
So. The first thing I will say is that for the majority of our early life (under twelve, basically), we lived with our father and mother. Our mother wasn't home a lot and at some point disappeared entirely and I can't really pinpoint a date for that. Our father was incredibly abusive (particularly towards Court and Ryland, because I was already pretty like how he wanted.)
I don't know what happened! Kind of. Not really.
I remember coming home and I don't even remember what from. I had literally arrived (minutes?) before police had. The kitchen was shut and Ryland was unconscious and all I remember is seeing the blood. Court had shot our father (presumably after something happened to Ryland) but during the case Ryland was very reluctant to discuss anything with anyone and in the end his testimony wasn't really used because he just defended Court. Once Court had gone to prison me and Ryland were sent into foster care and we found out much later he had died while in prison.
We obviously met later in life.
I had been doing stunts for something in California and dropped by the university I knew he was studying at. During this time, I can say he wasn't exactly the most pleasant? person?
He was either drunk / hungover during the majority of his college time before his doctorate. He didn't really have any girlfriends and could be incredibly abrasive to anybody who disagreed with him (or tried to talk to him about something he didn't want to talk about). it was probably a trauma response looking back on it but eventually he got some counselling and help and during his time as a middle school teacher he NEVER drank and was completely okay around the kids.
I was not told he went on the Petrova project.
I was not told he volunteered to go to space.
Ryland contacted me once.

I actually don't know? He dated women but he wasn't very interested in any of it. I wouldn't be surprised if he felt on the aroace spectrum? dunno if ry would see it that way

I know quite the bit about it. I flew out to see him in California once he came home from Denmark, (having watched it). What I hadn't known at the time but sort of knew was that his drinking problem had come around again.
I can say he was hungover? Tipsy? During that conference. He probably meant it but didn't mean to say it. That's around the time he went back to a counsellor, actually. I think Ry was tired of the academia stuff at that point, to be honest? He didn't really enjoy it for the academia part, rather the learning and the science stuff and discovery part.
He was happy becoming a teacher. He was very happy as a teacher. Is. I don't know.
