Subject: CA Universal School Meals Program Extended Through Summer 2021

Dear students and families,

As we approach the end of the school year, the state of California has just announced that it will be extending its Universal School Meals program providing free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of income level, throughout Summer 2021 to help reduce the impact of the current economic situation on families.

This means that any GCMS student can sign up to receive free breakfast, lunch, or both, either on GCMS campus or from these delivery locations throughout summer break. While we are not able to provide student transportation, we encourage families to coordinate joint bussing or carpooling to take advantage of this program. Have a great summer!

Sincerely,

Principal Marder

Ryland Grace

Ryland Michael Grace (November 12, 1991) is an American molecular biologist, educator, and the de facto second-in-command[a] of the Petrova Taskforce under Eva Stratt.

He is considered the world's leading expert on Astrophage biology and is one of the core science leads of the Petrova Taskforce, along with Dr Nina Lokken, Drs N. Saeed and Dimitri Komorov, and Dr Prija Lamai.

Early scientific career

Petrova Taskforce and Hail Mary mission

Personal life

Ryland Michael Grace was born on November 12, 1991 in San Francisco, California[1] to Rebecca Grace née Ryland[1], a former science teacher at JF Webb High School in North Carolina[2] [5], and Michael Thomas Grace, a pediatric nurse practitioner at UCSF Benioff[3] [5]. He is of Irish, English, and Scottish descent[4].

Grace's parents were killed in a car accident on Highway 101 in 2005[5], after which he was raised by his paternal grandmother[citation needed] until her death in 2011[6].

Grace obtained his B.S. and M.S. in a 5-year combined degree program, after which he pursued a PhD in molecular biology with a research focus in astrobiology. The arguments advanced by his doctoral dissertation led to an academic controversy at a UNESCO scientific conference in December 2017,[7] [8] [9] after which Grace left academia and began teaching science at Grover Cleveland Middle School in the Bay Area[10]. He was voted Teacher of the Year in 2020[10], and again in 2021 despite his departure from GCMS to join the Petrova Taskforce[11] [12].

Grace is unmarried and had no children[13].

Notes:

these are all real science and science fiction books, including correct authorial & publication information, because my four years working at my college library have left an indelible impact on me. i'm also definitely showing my age by having the kiddos read all the same science fiction books i read in middle school but imho they all stand the test of time! (also idk if anyone in the US knows David Almond, i didn't learn about him till i emigrated to Ireland, but god do i wish his books were better known stateside. i would've loved to read his stuff growing up)

you may recognise grace's wikipedia article as being slightly adapted from my other fic, i just made out your silhouette (brand it on my mind so i won’t forget) ☺️

Notes:

Title is from Herman Hesse: "So the tree rustles in the evening, when we stand uneasy before our own childish thoughts... But when we have learned how to listen to trees, then the brevity and the quickness and the childlike hastiness of our thoughts achieve an incomparable joy. Whoever has learned how to listen to trees no longer wants to be a tree. They want to be nothing except what they are. That is home. That is happiness.”
