“Didja know that flowers say stuff?”
Agatha paused wiping his face and narrowed her eyes. “You heard flowers talk? Miss Vidal didn’t give you a brownie or gummy or something, right?”
“No, Mama,” Nicky said, giggling, “they don't talk. It’s like … um, like how drawing a heart means I love you.”
“Oh, right. Like how red roses are for romance and yellow roses are for friendship. I've heard of that,” Agatha said, going back to cleaning off her kid. She nodded at the flowers on the table. “So what do those mean?”
“Miss Vidal said the yellow peonies are ‘new beginnings’ and the pink ones are affect … affection? I think. She wanted me to give ‘em to you."
Agatha's neighbor starts hitting on her through flowers, and she's not opposed. The problem is that she's a single mom and she's not sure if the antisocial, prank-pulling, lives in an actual gothic mansion Rio is the best influence for Nicky. And nothing matters more to Agatha than Nicky.

“So what you’re telling me is that there’s something wrong in the cosmos and an asteroid could hit us at any moment?” Rio teased.
“Precisely. You do that a lot,” Agatha added.
Rio furrowed her eyebrows. “Do what?”
“Make me do things I never would,” Agatha replied.
A smile crept onto Rio’s lips. “Maybe I’m it for you,” she joked.
But the look on Agatha’s face told her she hadn’t taken it as a joke.
“Maybe you are,” she admitted.
OR: one date that neither Agatha nor Rio wants to go on ends with them being married less than 24 hours later because sometimes that's all you need to know you met the love of your life.

Friday nights have belonged to Agatha and Rio for years.
Dinner, bad documentaries, shared blankets, and a spare key neither of them remembers making permanent. Their friendship has quietly expanded into every corner of their lives, but neither has been willing to ask whether it might already be something more.
Then Rio mentions that someone asked her on a date.
Agatha reacts with all the grace and emotional maturity one might expect, which is to say, not at all.
A week of jealousy, one badly handled argument, and several years of mutual pining later, they are finally forced to admit that the friendship they were both so afraid of losing may have been love all along.

"It's not your breathing," Rio clarified.
Agatha stuck out her elbow to lean her arm onto the couch and then pressed her fist into her cheek to balance herself. "You know I don't care what other people think of me. I mean, it's nice, and I like the money, but it's not necessary. Not like your opinion is. They know that."
"Which is fine," Rio stated. "Especially when I tell them I collect knives."

“Uh… hi.” The pizzeria employee sounds… sexier than Rio was imagining. Not that they were imagining anything, necessarily, they’re just not used to being seduced when trying to order food. “Can I place an order for delivery?”
There’s a long pause on the other end of the line. “Are you looking for roleplay?”
“Sorry, what?”
A long-suffering sigh. “Hon, do you know what number you called?”

The Alpha kept one arm wrapped around her mate, but leaned to the side so she could peer down at her son. “Yeah, baby?” she chuckled, poking him on the forehead.
Nicky crossed his eyes, trying to look at her finger, giggling. “‘M hungry. Apa give pork buns pwease?” He pointed at the bag of Chinese food on the counter.
They were attempting to teach him patience, given that Nicky had two doting Alphas for parents who happily gave him whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. They didn’t want him to be spoiled, after all. “In a minute, Mama and I are just having a discussion right now about her and the baby, and Mama needs a hug.”

Agatha watched with drooping eyelids as Rio walked over to the crib and picked Nicky up, holding him close. She felt a little jealous as Nicky quieted in his mother's arms, but mostly she was grateful, so glad to have both of them.
Rio started to sing a lullaby, low and sweet, and Agatha fell asleep halfway through.
Nicky won't sleep and all the other ups and downs of first time parenthood.
