Summary
The water is filling his lungs.
He scrunches his eyes to fight off the salt already burning deep up his nose, threatening to flood his whole body as he sinks, sinks…
He could swim up, but he doesn’t. He could be scared, but he isn’t. He’s resigned to die. To be buried in the cold, dark ocean, and become one of the many forgotten things that call it their tomb.
He’s sinking, deeper and deeper, feeling his body go stiff as the icy darkness wraps around his limbs.
The last blue light of the surface has abandoned him.
And he can’t be sad, can he? He knows that he chose this, after all. Even if he can’t remember it. Even if the tiniest inkling of regret is creeping up on him with each bit of light lost.
He goes limp, parting his lips to let the water in. -

Summary
Sleep called it their “period of release,” though none of them were sure whether it was meant as mercy or maintenance. The god had no use for nor understanding of warmth, of holidays, of the dull pull of human contact that drove them restless during the long, cloistered months of worship and work. But it understood enough to grant permission. Every year, as the first snow touched the ground, they were told to go. To live. To remember what they were before devotion carved them into vessels and to refill themselves enough to survive another year.

Summary
II, III and IV are on what can only be described as a suicide mission. No one had beaten the ruler Antigonos in 15 years, the man knew every step of every plan and had annexed several kingdoms already, spending unimaginable amounts of money for his army and his own lascivious way of life.
It was almost as though he had a prophet whispering in his ear and a never ending stash of pure gold in the dungeons of his stronghold. -

Summary
III breaks the silence. “I think I will go down to medical, actually.”
IV stares at him for a moment and then takes a deep breath. “Would you like some company?”
II looks at Vessel, who looks abashed at his own behavior, and thinks that it serves him right. II looks back at the way that IV looks tenderly at III and feels a traitorous glimmer of hope in his chest.
“Yeah, if you don’t mind,” III says, and he follows IV out the door.
