Cassian's father protested against the Republic, fought with words but still died. As he grew up, Cassian moved away from what his father had hoped for him as that was what the Rebellion needed of him. His life intersected with other parents/fathers trying to keep their families safe. Slight Jyn/Cassian at the end.
