“Grace say recording will be sent to humans with Taumoeba on Beatles. Rocky wants to talk to humans!”
The carapace of the creature tilts upwards as if excited. “Earth is beautiful beautiful beautiful planet!” It stomps one of its legs three times for emphasis. “Grace show Rocky many beautiful moving pictures! Mountains and forests and beaches and ocean and San Francisco! Rocky happy happy happy Earth safe! Rocky love Earth!”
Then it pauses. Its carapace lowers. Despite having no eyes or facial expression, it gives off the distinct feeling of glaring.
“Rocky hate hate hate humans.”-

Summary
Ryland Grace gets sick once a year.
It always starts the same way; a headache, some fatigue, nothing unusual. Then he goes to sleep and doesn’t wake up for a while. After that, it’s just a week or so of flu symptoms, and then he’s fine again.
It’s inconvenient, sure, but manageable.This is all the norm for Ryland.
But Stratt doesn’t know about it until it happens without warning.

There is a tiny, rectangular object at the very bottom of the box. I fish it out, and turn it over in my hand. It's a thumbdrive! On one side, the Project Hail Mary logo is printed onto it. On the other side, my name in neat, precise sharpie. Upon seeing this text on the thumbdrive, my heart sinks to my stomach. I'm 90% sure I know who this is from.

Grace doesn't really let it sink in what it means that he's not going back to Earth, and when it does, he has a little freak out about it. Thank god Rocky's there to help him :)

It hits me then that this will be the rest of my life.
Not the Hail Mary—though I do doubt Rocky and Erid will actually be able to build me a home on their planet—no. But this. The food. Eating alone. Stuck behind a barrier from the first person who actually ever understood me whom I'll never get to touch.
He's a person, sure, and his company is keeping me from going crazy but it's not the same. He's not human.
I'm never going to see a single human ever again.
