Summary
Pulling back to look at him, she rested her hands on his chest, while his settled to her waist to keep her close. She looked down, then back up at him. There was something she was holding back. “There is something I,” her eyes fluttered down again, this time to where her hands rested. “That I need to tell you.”

Summary
Settling on the stool next to Mike, Johánna remarks, “You have loved her a long time, yes?”

Summary
He knew he had no right to be upset. El was a grown woman, twenty-three years old, and the time apart had done her well, if you asked him. And she had spent so much time alone. It would be wrong to expect her to deny herself pleasure and intimacy—something she so deeply craved—hoping that something, someone, could fill the Mike-shaped hole in her heart.
It was all fair, and despite the jealousy simmering in his blood, he understood.
But male ego was a fragile, fragile thing.
Because if Mike wasn’t her first, then he had to be her best.

Summary
“I’m selfish, El,” Mike blurts, his thumb rubbing circles at the small of her back. “I don’t like other guys looking at you the way I look at you.”
El’s expression softens, a look crossing over her eyes that tightens his throat. He’s relieved that she’s not put off by his selfish, possibly possessive, attitude. “I know,” she says with a light nod. “But I don’t think they look at me the way you look at me.”
