Summary
Mike plans the post-grad road trip in secret—maps, routes, marking places he thinks El will like. But once they leave, none of it really matters.
They don’t rush, because for once, they don’t need to. For the first time in her life, El gets to stop, breathe, and see everything she’s been missing.
And Mike? He’d drive forever just to see her smile.

Summary
Settling on the stool next to Mike, Johánna remarks, “You have loved her a long time, yes?”
Mike startles, head whipping to look at Johánna, who merely smiles at him in amusement around her sip of beer. He relaxes at the sight of her, clearing his throat as he nods. “Yeah. I’ve loved her since the day we met.”

Summary
He knew he had no right to be upset. El was a grown woman, twenty-three years old, and the time apart had done her well, if you asked him. And she had spent so much time alone. It would be wrong to expect her to deny herself pleasure and intimacy—something she so deeply craved—hoping that something, someone, could fill the Mike-shaped hole in her heart.
It was all fair, and despite the jealousy simmering in his blood, he understood.
But male ego was a fragile, fragile thing.
Because if Mike wasn’t her first, then he had to be her best.

Summary
“I’m selfish, El,” Mike blurts, his thumb rubbing circles at the small of her back. “I don’t like other guys looking at you the way I look at you.”
El’s expression softens, a look crossing over her eyes that tightens his throat. He’s relieved that she’s not put off by his selfish, possibly possessive, attitude. “I know,” she says with a light nod. “But I don’t think they look at me the way you look at me.”

Summary
"Nancy, Mike, now that you have your own place, maybe you don’t need to receive your mail here? We got some kind of magazine subscription for you two recently.”
Mike can’t remember signing up for any subscription. When he finally opens it, he finds some kind of travel magazine. He’s like, 99% sure he didn’t get it, but frankly, it could have come from anyone. Nancy’s told him he needs to ‘broaden his horizons’ to get better at writing, and everyone else thinks he should try to ‘put himself out there’, whatever that means. Inside, there's a pin badge, with a name he doesn't recognize on it. ‘Fossárdalur’, whatever the hell that means.
He skims through the newspaper, finds a big article about Iceland and its many wonders.
“Fossárdalur”, it reads, “is an absolute must-see. Easily accessible by car, the river is most famous for its many waterfalls.”

Summary
“It’s like something’s been on your mind for a while and you’re not—you’re just keeping it to yourself.”
Her throat works. “Am I not allowed to do that?”
She doesn’t mean to sound defensive, but the words come out like that anyway. Mike blinks, a little surprised and she can’t blame him for it, but the gentleness of his voice doesn’t fade. “Of course you are,” he says with a nod. Never one to deny her anything.
It sends an aching pang through her chest. He’s always on her side, puts her above everyone else—including himself. He has shown it to her time and time again, proved to her repeatedly that nothing is more important to him than she is. And that—that worries her.

Summary
Fresh flowers always sat on the center of the small table in the kitchen by the window, colorful cushions on the couch, trinkets she picked up from the bookstore. It wasn’t much, but it was enough. Her things kept her company, even if her heart yearned for more.
Until Mike. Mike, who left everything and everyone behind to be with her. Who slowly started to make this place his own as well—that’s when she started to really notice the changes.

Summary
Truth be told, she hadn’t meant to wait exactly eleven years.
The days are long but peaceful. It took a while—almost two years, to be precise—for the tension to release from her muscles. To finally relax within the walls of her small apartment, or out under the Icelandic sun, and no longer feel as though she is being hunted, watched. She had to remind herself, actively, waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat with a frightful whimper or a wanting name on her lips, that Hawkins was some three thousand miles away. That no one is looking for a girl named Eleanor Iverson in Hella, Iceland.

“When you want to see me, you can just call. You can look for me in the void only for real emergencies. Like a matter of life or death, or something.”
She leans closer again, her breath hot against his cheek - if she’s trying to distract him, it is working spectacularly well.
“Deal,” she whispers against his lips.(Or, 3 times El visits Mike in the void.)
