Really, Hazel had figured that was the end of it. She liked that Frank acted so interested in her haircare routine, but, at the end of the day, her hair was her own responsibility, and she wouldn’t blame him for getting bored of it, just like everyone who didn’t get it always did. And yet, Frank just kept listening. Even on non-wash days, when Hazel hadn’t even brought up her hair, Frank would ask his questions, would check in when the weather turned humid, and would send her pictures of various products on sale and ask her opinion on them. Each and every time he listened like he was worried Hazel might quiz him later, and then he just went about his day. Hazel thought it was a bit weird, yes, but it was a harmless, good-natured weird that was probably just his way of showing that he was listening to her and wanted to get a good grade in boyfriend.
Hazel found out in month eight that she was wrong. Well, she wasn’t wrong, Frank had been listening, and he definitely deserved a good grade in boyfriend, but she had completely miscalculated the scale.

Summary
It was a stupid mistake. Beyond stupid, really. They’d been walking across what Leo had assumed was a field when he got the bright idea to test and see how his fire would react in that level of cold. He wanted to know if he could heat his body up to the point where he genuinely started steaming, just for the hell of it. Then there had been a strange sound that Leo had never heard before like laser blasters in an old sci-fi movie, Jason’s eyes had gone wide and terrified, and Leo found himself up to his armpits in ice water.
Fortunately, the mistake wasn’t fatal. Between the fire, Nectar, and nature healing Gatorade Hedge made them pack, it was pretty much impossible for Leo to catch hypothermia. Unfortunately, none of that could save him from being absolutely miserable.

Jason’s ears pricked, and he heard the half-truth, just like Lupa had taught him. That was fine. He could fib, too. “Okay. I’m Michael. Did you see anything weird about that guy?”
Emil paused for a moment, assessing before he shrugged. “Does there have to be something weird? He was a big guy picking on a smaller kid, and that’s not fair. You’re, what? Twelve?”
“Ten.”
Emil brightened considerably. “Me too!”
Jason cocked his head to the side. “Really? I thought you were eight.”
Emil scowled at him. “Next time I’m letting bad guys eat you.”

Well, I don’t miss you because I’m literally about to go have dinner with you, but the future me that’s trying to cross the globe to find you already misses you. You know what I mean. Am I unavoidably detained
