Really, Hazel had figured that was the end of it. She liked that Frank acted so interested in her haircare routine, but, at the end of the day, her hair was her own responsibility, and she wouldn’t blame him for getting bored of it, just like everyone who didn’t get it always did. And yet, Frank just kept listening. Even on non-wash days, when Hazel hadn’t even brought up her hair, Frank would ask his questions, would check in when the weather turned humid, and would send her pictures of various products on sale and ask her opinion on them. Each and every time he listened like he was worried Hazel might quiz him later, and then he just went about his day. Hazel thought it was a bit weird, yes, but it was a harmless, good-natured weird that was probably just his way of showing that he was listening to her and wanted to get a good grade in boyfriend.
Hazel found out in month eight that she was wrong. Well, she wasn’t wrong, Frank had been listening, and he definitely deserved a good grade in boyfriend, but she had completely miscalculated the scale.

Summary
It was a stupid mistake. Beyond stupid, really. They’d been walking across what Leo had assumed was a field when he got the bright idea to test and see how his fire would react in that level of cold. He wanted to know if he could heat his body up to the point where he genuinely started steaming, just for the hell of it. Then there had been a strange sound that Leo had never heard before like laser blasters in an old sci-fi movie, Jason’s eyes had gone wide and terrified, and Leo found himself up to his armpits in ice water.
Fortunately, the mistake wasn’t fatal. Between the fire, Nectar, and nature healing Gatorade Hedge made them pack, it was pretty much impossible for Leo to catch hypothermia. Unfortunately, none of that could save him from being absolutely miserable.

Emil paused for a moment, assessing before he shrugged. “Does there have to be something weird? He was a big guy picking on a smaller kid, and that’s not fair. You’re, what? Twelve?”
“Ten.”
Emil brightened considerably. “Me too!”
Jason cocked his head to the side. “Really? I thought you were eight.”
Emil scowled at him. “Next time I’m letting bad guys eat you.”

Regardless, I’m out here somewhere, and I’m going to get home to you as soon as possible. I’d make a Styx promise, but I’m a little worried about how that would actually go down for the both of us. “Probably, yeah,” Leo agreed. “Like, if you told him you don’t like being asked out, he’s way too noble to do it anyway.” Piper still looked like she was being asked to walk the plank, so Leo cut in. “Look, why don’t I take him on a test drive?”
Piper blinked at him. “What? You’re gonna date him instead? Be my guest.”
“No, I’m not going to date him,” Leo said, rolling his eyes. “I’m just gonna… put him through his paces. I’ll tell him it’s a test and we’ll see if he really has what it takes to be the boyfriend we think he is. That way if he is mid, you don’t have to waste your time with him.”
“But you’re okay with wasting your own time?” Piper asked. “You’re willing to just date him without all the gross kissing benefits?”
“I think I’ll survive being on the receiving end of Jason Grace’s attention for a few months, even if we don’t have the ‘gross kissing benefits’” Leo soothed. “Besides, if it sucks, I can bail. I’m just testing to see if he’s worth your time and effort. If he proves he’s not, I have no reason to stick around.”

Summary
Their English class had done a unit on classic English poets, and Jason had discovered a love of reciting poetry. That, naturally, had led him to the poetry club (which Leo insisted on calling the Dead Poets Society, for some reason) and for one shining moment, everything looked like it was gonna work out.
Then, because the world could never be that kind, Derrick, the club president, had cheerfully announced that the next meeting they would be reciting their own poetry.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Jason groaned into his pillow while Leo sympathetically stroked his hair. “I don’t know how to write poetry.”
“What if you just started talking in Latin?” Leo suggested. “Then you wouldn’t have to actually write anything, you could just recite a cake recipe or something.”
Jason paused and considered that option with no small amount of hope before remembering that Sheamus was in his Latin class and would absolutely call him out. “I can’t. They’ll figure it out.”

“Sofía is fine,” Jason said firmly. “Will even stopped by and said she’d be up in no time.”
“Will is a battle medic,” Leo accused, spitting out the word like it tasted bad. “His baseline for ‘alright’ is not actively bleeding out. Sorry if that’s not the frame of reference I want applied to my six-year-old.”
“He trained as a battle medic,” Jason corrected. “Currently, he’s a pediatrician.”
Leo didn’t exactly have anything solid to counter that, so he fell back on his first and best love: numbers. He shoved the thermometer that had been taunting him under Jason’s nose. “If she’s fine, then explain this!”
Jason read the numbers and arched an eyebrow. “This says 99.7 degrees.”

For six years, Leo built a fortress around his daughter. For six years, it worked. For six years, Sofía was perfectly happy and healthy. Unfortunately, no fortress can ever truly stand up to the infectious might that is the public school system. Now, Leo must face the music and accept that not everything can (or should) be fixed.

“No, no, no. You gotta do it like a gun show flex type thing.”
“Like this?” Jason moved his arm so that it was parallel with the floor. When Leo nodded, he grabbed the egg and turned it long ways. “Okay, then it will crack like this?”
“No!” Leo insisted. “It’s impossible either way!”
“Then why did it matter so much which direction my arm went?”
Leo paused and considered that, trying to math it out before shaking his head. “It just does. Trust me.”
“When you say that it makes me want to trust you less!” Jason huffed.

It’s just pretty.” Annabeth just keeps carefully studying it, so he starts to lower his hand, expression gentle and understanding. “You don’t have to take it if–”
“No!” Annabeth snaps, her hand darting out to grab the stem before it can retreat any farther. She focuses very hard on not squeezing it tight enough to bruise the delicate thing. “You said you got it for me, so it’s mine now.”

Hazel hummed softly, then pecked him on the cheek, which was a surprise as he literally didn’t see it coming. “You’re not a clutz.”
“Thanks,” Frank said a bit sheepishly, feeling his cheeks flush. He cleared his throat. “So, uh, where are we going anyway?”
“Somewhere special,” Hazel said unhelpfully. She and Nico both had a habit of doing that, of only giving vague or cryptic half-answers, and Frank sort of wondered if it was just an inherent Child of the Underworld thing or if they got together and practiced. Either one was a pretty valid assumption. As if sensing his thoughts Hazel added, “We’re almost there.”
Hazel led him in silence for only a minute more, and when she stopped, Frank could feel the difference. The tunnel they had been walking through was fairly large – big enough for him to stand at his full height and not feel claustrophobic, at any rate – but it was enclosed. Now they were in a much bigger, more open area. Sill pitch black, but the cold air moved freely, and he could hear the soft flow of water from nearby.

Nico turned to head into the arena, and Jason was going to follow him but he stumbled slightly. Nico’s eyes widened, and he reached out a hand like he was going to help, but Leo beat him to it. He had plastered himself to Jason’s chest, feet planted so firmly that even Jason’s gigantor body couldn’t knock him over, and he gave Jason his cheesiest, most obnoxious smile. “Hey, Superman!” He glanced over his shoulder and nodded at Nico. “Bat Boy.”
Jason blinked a couple times like he was trying to connect the dots, but he still reached a hand up and stroked Leo’s hair. “Hey, Leo.”
“Whatcha up to?”
“Um.” Jason paused and rubbed at his furrowed brow like he was struggling to remember. “I think we were about to, uh…”
“Sparring,” Nico supplied. “Last time Thalia visited, she taught him a technique that he was going to show me.”
Leo blew a raspberry. "Boo, no, that’s boring. It’s Boyfriend Time, actually. You’re going to spend all day with me.”

Thanks to a deeply unfortunate amount of head injuries, Jason has chronic migranes. Thanks to a lifetime of servitude, he's also got a complex. Both are eqyally deblitating, but luckily Leo knows a thing of two about his boyfriend.
