Summary
a different take on the plane situation, in which it lands a little more roughly, ilya gets injured, and shane drives 13 hours to get to his man.
-
“Shane? Sweetie, are you okay? We saw the news,” his mother says immediately upon answering the phone. She sounds like she’s been crying.
“No,” he answers, too raw to even think about lying. “I’m—I’m on my way to Tampa.” There’s no point in lying about that, either—they’ll find out one way or another.
“You what?” He can hear the panic in his mother’s voice.
“Hayden helped me get a rental car,” he grits out, taking a steadying breath. “I-I have to get to him.”

Summary
Ilya had told Shane to leave because they needed space - they needed some room to catch their breath so they could talk about things properly. So they could say sorry and fix the mess they had made. But one day apart stretched into two, into three, into a week, and suddenly Shane was on the other end of the phone, saying, ”Maybe this isn’t going to work, Ilya.”
At least Ilya is good at that part; he’s an expert in being left behind.
(Or, Ilya and Shane breakup. Then the Centaurs’ plane almost crashes.)

Summary
“The Centaurs’ plane had to make an emergency landing.” Yuna said, her voice the same kind of gentle she reserved for bad news. “There was a fire. I haven’t gotten a hold of Ilya yet, but from what I do know, it sounds like everyone will be ok.”
“Holy shit.” Shane leaned forward, covering his face. “Holy shit.” He breathed. His whole body was numb with panic now.

Summary
Once outside, he leaned forward and put his hand against the cold stone wall. His phone was still to his ear, the message still recording.
“Ilya. Please. Please. I can’t do this. I don’t know what to do. Please. You can’t be dead.” His voice broke on the word. “I love you. I love you so much. More than anything. I need to hear your voice. I need you to…I need you…I need you…fuck. Please Ilya, please.”
Shane took the phone away from his ear and held it between both hands as though he were praying. He realized he was on the floor and didn’t know how he got there. He was crying. He was fairly certain he was hyperventilating.
His brain was desperately trying to grab at anything. Any thread of logic. Any idea of what to do next.
I have to see him.
Yes. That made sense. Shane needed to get to Tampa. Now. He would go there. He would find Ilya. Ilya would be fine. They would be together. He would see him. Tell him how much he loved him. He had to go. He had to go now.

Summary
“There’s information coming out that the Centaurs’ plane crashed on its way to Tampa.”
The entire world tilts on its axis.
For a moment Shane feels like he’s being burned alive, and then in an instant it’s just bitter cold; there’s ice in his veins, his lungs, his heart. God, his heart. Is it still beating? He can’t tell. Surely not. Surely, if Ilya were - if he were gone, then Shane’s heart would have fallen still. There would be nothing left for it to beat for.

Summary
Yuna's hand meets Ilya’s. The rivalry status that the league had painted over her son's relationship with the Russian now cast aside. They clutch to each other in silent acknowledgement of their shared pain, hope and fear in what had just manifested before their eyes. There's a uniting force in pain and grief—It's one that wipes slates clean, makes you forgive, makes you love harder and appreciate more than you ever thought possible. Everything she ever knew or felt about the Russian whose hand she now clung to was dissolved
Shane Hollander briefly dies on the ice after the hit from Marlow in the Montreal vs Boston Game. Ilya handles his emotions poorly and has a very public meltdown revealing their relationship to the world.

Summary
“Rozanov?”
Ilya’s ears rang, the air suddenly very heavy and suffocating. Because that wasn’t the voice Shane used to address Ilya with. Those weren’t the soft eyes Shane used to look at Ilya with. That wasn’t the body language Shane used to welcome Ilya with. Yet right now, Shane’s voice was filled with confusion and distance, his pretty-doe eyes full of wariness and his body tense.
--
After the game accident, Ilya goes to visit Shane at the hospital only to find out that Shane had no recollection of the past eight years they've shared together.

Summary
Shane put God on a back burner sometime between the ages of eleven and twelve. It was around that time that he barely stepped foot off the ice. His dad would joke that he was born with skates on, while his mother cursed out a grown man for a bad play. God, religion, faith came second to the rush of adrenaline as he flew on the ice.
It takes seventeen years and the love of his life being dead for twenty-eight minutes to relearn how to pray.

Or, Shane's game is cancelled and he reads Ilya's would have been last messages in a tiny hotel room with JJ and Hayden at his side.
