I told Jason today that I like P— that I wasn't sure about him at first, but he's grown on me, especially in how supportive he is of my son. I don't think Jason understood what I was trying to say. I think he still thinks I don't know, which is why I haven't brought it up directly. He has to be ready.
It's exhausting, waiting. Part of me is resentful that he still doesn't trust me after all this time. Have I not loved him unconditionally from the moment I held him for the first time, when he looked up at me with sleepy newborn eyes and grasped at my blouse as his mother put him in my arms?

His face was astonishingly empty, like he didn't even recognize me as I backed away. It was so quick it made me dizzy.
I barricaded myself in my suite. Dragged my hope chest in front of the door in case he tried to follow after. I called Jason.
I haven't spoken to him since before the wedding. I don't know why he picked up. It was the first ring. He asked me, "what's wrong?" and I asked him how he knew. He laughed, quiet and sad, and told me "You wouldn't have called me otherwise".

"It's always been you," Frank adds, closing his fingers gently around Leo's ankle. His hand is huge— he could probably crush the bone with a squeeze— but it's no more threatening than Hazel's.
"If this is a prank," Leo replies, mouth cottony, after what feels like a year of dead silence. "It's a really, really sick one."
For a second, the silence stretches on. Then Frank pouts— honest to betsy fucking pouts, his (plush, pink) lower lip jutting out slightly and his dark brows knitting together.
"Come on, man," he says, plaintive. Imploring. "You know us better than that."

"The girl playing Belle is Venus' daughter Piper, from that time V slept with a Hollywood action star. Stunningly pretty like her mother, whom I haven't seen since she threw punch on my dress at senior prom. P has a lovely voice. She and Jason blend wonderfully. Looks like kismet.
I mentioned to him after rehearsal how pretty she is and how well they seem to get along. He turned very red, told me she's in his homeroom, then meekly asked if he's being that obvious about his crush. I reminded him I've raised him since he was three. He admitted he really likes her and he's pretty sure she likes him back, but he doesn't want to ruin the show if things get awkward. Very mature, very considerate.
I want to rip her apart. I'm so happy for him I could scream. I cried for ten minutes in my en-suite when we got home."

Jason's so out of it he probably can't tell the distinction, but Percy can. They don't know if he'll be okay, and they need to manage their expectations.

"It's because you keep frying it with your flat iron," Zoë continues, as though Thalia didn't speak at all. "Why don't you just let it curl? They look cute on you."
That question is thorny, and they're still new to this whole frenemies-with-benefits thing— but the compliment warms Thalia's face. Maybe that's why she finds herself exhaling deeply, staring up at the ceiling to avoid Zoë's dark, calculating eyes.

"Since I'm me, DW always has at least one very loud voice around to tell her 'no, this is a hot pile of garbage', but I admitted my lack of impartiality before I even started this story for a reason. Ex is many things, but she's not cagey or dishonest or afraid to call it like she sees it. She cuts straight to the heart of the issue, and sometimes you need that.
Especially if you're like DW, and you've spent your whole existence carving away every unique part of yourself so you'll fit in someone else's cage and now you can't quite believe anyone thinks you're too beautiful not to be free.
