Summary
They never could pinpoint when it started. He was young, they knew that. Younger than he should have been, younger than was fair. When Harriet and Anthony finally scraped together enough money to get their own place, Harriet almost didn't want to do it. Leaving home meant leaving Harry, and that wasn't okay.
“It'll be fine,” he whispered when she left, when she was packing a bag with shaking hands in the middle of the night. “Dad's barely ever home. I'll be okay.”
Harriet didn't know how to say it wasn't James she was scared of.
There's something wrong with Harry. Harriet would sell a lot more than her soul to fix it.

Summary
Harry was on his third cup of coffee, shaking from cold and caffeine and the last dregs of adrenaline, when the door to the waiting room pushed open and someone came running in. He was startled enough to jump but too exhausted for the movement to be anything more than a twitch. CJ, using his coat as a blanket and his thigh as a pillow, squeezed her stuffed shark tighter to her chest but didn't otherwise stir.
When he looked up from his styrofoam cup, Uma was standing halfway across the waiting room, jaw hanging open.
“Hey,” Harry said. Uma looked like she had just woken up, groggy and disoriented, and Harry had been awake for longer than he wanted to think about. He figured they were both too tired for any kind of dramatic reunion.
Harry and Uma haven't spoken since their explosive breakup six years ago. Sitting by themselves in a waiting room at two thirty in the morning seems as good a time as any to try bridging the gap left after more than half a decade of trying to forget each other.

Summary
“Dude, did anyone ever tell you your kid looks like a blond Audrey Rose?” a cashier at Burger King asked. “Like, back when she was on Keeping Moody?”
“Haha,” Harry said and started going to Wendy's, instead.
They do their best, but Audrey is famous and CJ is her spitting image. It was bound to get out.

Summary
“Mate, she said no comment,” Dad said. “Leave it.”
“I just have a few–”
“She said no.”
“I don't want to talk to–” CJ started, but then the reporter grabbed her arm and yanked her backwards hard enough that she lost her grip on her dad's hand.
It's been a few months since the media found about CJ and everyone went crazy about it. Things are finally starting to calm down, though, enough that she and her dad can go out in public if they're a little sneaky about it. Most people aren't really interested in them anymore.
Which is why neither of them are expecting the reporter waiting for them outside the movie theater.

Summary
“I fucked this up, didn't I?” Audrey asked softly, and Harry frowned.
“Fucked what up?”
“CJ,” she said, closing her eyes and leaning her head back against the wall. “Keeping her a secret. It just made it a bigger deal when people found out.”
Harry swallowed. It was an echo of thoughts he had refused to give a voice to for nearly a decade, shapeless anxiety before the world found them and guilt-ridden resentment after. “We… might have jumped the gun, hiding her like that.”
Audrey’s lips twisted into the shape of something that was trying very hard to be a smile. Harry wondered sometimes how the hell she'd ever become an actress, when he'd been able to see right through her since day one. “Thanks for saying ‘we.’”
After they put CJ to bed, Harry and Audrey take a little time to fall apart.

Summary
“Hey, dad?”
“Hm?”
“Were your parents, like, abusive or something?”
Harry didn't drop the pot he was holding, but he did set it down on the stovetop nearly in slow motion. He didn't turn around to look at CJ. “Why do you ask?”

Summary
“You haven't eaten in two days?” Gil asked. Harry giggled again, then ground his teeth together until he stopped.
“I didn't think about it,” he said. “I've just been so busy. I filled up half a sketchbook the last few days, which is great but probably not a good sign. Should I tell Bonny I can't come in?”
“Yeah, I don't think you should be tattooing people when you're like this,” Gil said, and Harry hummed in agreement. “Okay, I'm asking this because it's important, and I love you both and want you to be safe. I'm not trying to be a dick.”
“You're not a dick,” Harry said. “You couldn't ever be. I love you, too. You're my best friend.”
“You said you haven't eaten in a few days,” Gil said. “Has CJ?”
Harry's head, forever getting in the way of his life.

Summary
CJ bit her lip. “I don't know. You just seem, uh.” She shrugged. “Not okay? Are you still upset about your dream?”
Harry opened his mouth, then closed it. Honesty, he thought. Transparency. Setting an example. “Not really,” he said finally. “You know I have a hard time sleeping sometimes, but this wasn't like that. I'm just stressed, and I think my brain decided to run with it.”
“What are you stressed about?” CJ asked. “Break it down for me. We'll make it into smaller pieces.”
That brought a reluctant smile to Harry's face. “This isn't one that can be broken down that easy, duckling,” he said. “It's a little too big.”
CJ's scared of the thunder. Harry's scared of something else entirely.
