Summary
It would make sense that the warehouse would be at its quietest at night, but that wasn’t the case. The junkies grew restless and the rats more bold after the sun went down. No, that condemned property where they ran their business was actually its quietest when the boss was there - Camila inspiring the girls’ fear but interpreting it as respect. And James and all of the other men allowed her to believe in her own delusions, because it was safer for all if Camila Vargas felt admired and revered.
Except… forty-eight hours after running out of that warehouse to rescue Teresa Mendoza, when James walked back inside of it, there was a different kind of silence, heavy and foreboding, hanging over the concrete zoo with its metal cages. It was the silence of death, which was a misleading description, because even if no one was making a sound, the mood of the warehouse was loud - practically screaming at James.
She knows. She knows. She knows.

Summary
James was really fucking tired of having to help another man take a piss three times a day, especially a man who was so… mustached.
“We need to talk,” he announced, striding towards the sicario Teresa had captured when the cartel soldier was sent to kill her. The older, barrel chested and stocky man was zip tied - hands and feet - to a chair James had bolted to the dock. The prisoner didn’t respond. He just glared up at James from under a heavy brow, his mouth no doubt set in a grimace even if the aforementioned facial hair prevented anyone from seeing his lips.

Summary
With a nickname like Batman, James expected more from Cesar Güemes, Epifanio’s closest confidant. But he was just a man - as fallible and killable as the next. In fact, when he first heard mention of Cesar, he thought he was called Badman, which would have been accurate, but there was also nothing, as far as James could tell, that separated Cesar from any other bad man. Even his preferred form of torture, teeth extraction, was rather cliche if not pedestrian. But Batman? Surely, that meant something.
Was he a vigilante, cleaning up the streets of Sinaloa, before Epifanio found him? Did he possess a keen sense of hearing, picking up footsteps in the night sooner and clearer than all of the other soldados? Perhaps he looked like a bat with beady, little eyes, sharp teeth, and ears seemingly too big for his face? But it was just his coat… as far as James could determine - the long, leather duster flaring out behind Cesar like the cape crusader’s. The nickname might have been a disappointment, but it told James something very important about the other man, a man who would eventually become, if not exactly an enemy, then at least certainly not an ally.
