Summary
The basement used to be the Tremont’s room in its glorious evening parties, and even now a cluster of chandeliers hung from the ceiling, radiating pale, elegant light. Its wooden floorboards were smooth from its final waxing, and a man was standing there with his arms wrapped across his front, staring straight ahead in dumb, dogged resolution, trembling badly in his shabby coat.
Besides Phil Bushey’s hand, there was a vintage stereo vinyl-player, slowly revolving its large circular disc, sending a thin stream of reverberating music swirling into the air like smoke: a jangly, wavering guitar solo, a whooping, melodic voice somewhat forlorn in its gravelly plea.
I asked for water… oh she brought me gasoline.

Summary
The tents were striped, bright crimson and white, shining with a coating of gold, reminding him of the polka-dot hairbands his daughter Jannie had worn for years and refused to take off. He began to walk, onto the grass, where footsteps of trainers and combat-boots had churned out a muddy pathway.
In which Rusty Everett arrives in an alternate universe and attends a late-evening circus performance.Series

Summary
They discovered the compasses about a week ago, and since then, none of them had gone back to breathe the foul, rotten warm air under the Dome. The power of the force-field powered the liquid, smooth as lamp-oil, shimmering faintly blue as it ran into compasses hooked up to an invisible generator. They made the devices for themselves. They experimented, and they ventured out, away from their home universe, to explore.
They escaped into the Multiverse.

Summary
Five minutes later he stepped out of the 7-11 down the street with a bundle wedged under his arm, and saw that Junior still sitting on the bench up the street, waiting for him, a still silhouette beneath the yellow streetlamp. The world was silent and the evening black as pitch, gentle as a fog.
“There,” Barbie said.
He threw the half-threadbare blanket in Junior Rennie’s direction, and it landed in his lap.
“To make sure you don’t freeze to death.”
Barbie and an alternate-universe version of Junior Rennie share an unlikely heart-to-heart on a late-night street corner.

Summary
For a moment Linda Everett froze, looking down at the wooden back of the mirror, and in this moment of bewildered terror what came to her was not her mother’s warning ill luck, but a poem she’d studied in high school. Some line in the middle of a Tennyson poem. She bent down and took it with both hands, feeling the almost delirious horror running in her veins like dark roots.
Parts of the mirror’s surface were still intact, but there were ugly, spindly cracks hacking the reflection apart like the cracks of thin ice across a frozen pond. She held it up, was trying to prop it up against the mantlepiece when she saw the reflections, both hers and the one that stood behind her.
She saw her own face, white and flabbergasted, grotesque in the broken reflection, and Carter Thibodeau, standing there in a pair of muddied jeans and a blue cop’s shirt rolled up at the sleeves, the thin dark mirror-cracks cutting lopsided across his waist, his shoulder, his nose, his chin, rendering in fractured pieces a bulky, looming boogeyman.

Summary
The warmth hit slowly, like some slow, languid kiss drawn from his lips: the warmth of reeking humans and dusty boilers, the moist, liquor-clotted air sweet with perfume and foul with sweat, sickly. The bar was small, but brightly lit with overhead lamps. There were tables clustered in corners, as if fitted together in broom closets, and the dance-floor – a large, oval-shaped platform with wooden banisters on one side, grease-shiny floors gaudy beneath soft lights – was empty apart from an old keyboard and a battered set of drums in the corner, a long brown-wood bar-stand running all the way across the Harpooner’s floor. Silver glints and cheap flashes of green bottles and glasses were scattered along the counter, but the strip of the bar-stand looked clean.
Angie McCain was sitting at the end of the bar-strip, smoking, long black-laced legs dangling an inch above the floor as she swung idly from side to side on the barstool. There was red lipstick slicked across her mouth like a dappled kiss. At Junior’s approach, she lifted her head, and her face lit up into a smile.

Summary
The young woman was standing to his left, leaning against one of the cargo holds, and her feet were the first things Carter saw: her feet clad in a pair of black, steel-toed combat boots, with leather straps and barely susceptive heels. When she walked, the steely tips clinked against the ground.
The whole world was lopsided, through a blur of haze, as he blinked.
For a moment her face suspended above his, glowing and radiant beneath the lights. The face of a mother suspending over the baby’s crib.
“There,” Sammy Bushey said. The flicker of a smile. “That’s better.”
She lifted the bottle in her hand to her lips, and took an easy, satisfied swig.
In which Carter lands in a completely foreign universe and encounters the last person in this Multiverse he is ever likely to meet again. And it all escalates from there.

Summary
“Rennie,” he said. “I’m gonna have to need you to hold on.”
A beat later, he felt two arms wrap around his middle – tight-tight-tight – so tight it knocked all the breath out of him in one quick puff. There was time, as Barbie nudged the clutch upwards and wrenched the throttle into life, to hear the final yell emerge dimly through in the sudden rattle of the Harley’s engine.
Barbie turned his head. “What?”
Junior Rennie bellowed it again. “I said I fuckin’ HATE you!”
And he laughed, unable to help it, even though the sound of it was lost in the din as the motorbike propelled them forward, baying and guttural and vibrating from deep within, a comet into the sky.

Summary
Junior tilted his chin out. Met his eyes. “Your fly’s unzipped,” he said. The little smile was in his voice even in the dark.
“Now that’s a kindergarten trick, Rennie. And way below you.”
Junior laughed, his real laugh, and in that moment it took all Barbie had not to reach out and pull him closer. “Didn’t know they taught y’all that shit in goddamn cornfed Iowa.”
It's Barbie's last night in a universe that is not his own, and the edges grow a little softer.
