Summary
Grian looks at him, his hand, and then meets his eyes again. He hesitates. “How do I know this isn’t just a ploy to get me to lower my guard?” He asks. “You realize how suspicious you sound, right? I mean, no one is ever entirely honest right off the bat. They usually have something hidden up their sleeves. So what's up yours?”
Scar grins, and he finds that he’s already loving this idea. He looks at this stranger in front of him, someone burning uncontrollably and so clearly needing an output. He looks at Grian and finds himself reminded of a bird, one with ruffled feathers too messy to fly. Yes, that'll do nicely. “Well, songbird,” Grian lets out a weird noise at the pet name, “there really isn’t any way to prove it to you right now besides word of tongue. Besides, maybe I truly have nothing to hide.”

Summary
Grian’s head snaps up as he hears something behind him. It’s a slight creak in the floorboard, one that he might not have heard had his hearing been duller. He’s in the middle of turning onto the next page of his book when he hears it. The sound comes from behind him and Grian’s hand stills. He silences his breath, feeling the hair on the back of his neck stand on edge.
He waits, hearing a second creak.
For a split second, he wonders if Scar has finished work early and is attempting to play a prank.

When Scar speaks again, his voice is soft and kind, “You may be my bodyguard, but there’s more to who you are than just that, G. Allow yourself to have an identity.” He offers a smile, one that is gentle and warm. His smile is sympathetic, and the hands on Grian’s shoulders are oddly warm despite the cold. “And because I’m mayor, I’m making it an official rule that you have to have fun with me.” Scar winks and the moment is broken, serious air being blown away by the breezy winter wind.
Yeah, Grian decides, he doesn’t understand Scar one single bit. He doesn’t understand how he can go from flippant and carefree to serious and threatening at the drop of a hat. He opens his mouth to respond when a voice stops him.
“Grian? Is that… is that really you?”

Not waiting for his response, Scar opens the envelope up and finds a card sitting neatly inside. His eyes narrow at it as he pulls it out and sets the envelope aside. Opening the card, his jaw drops. “A personal invite from Ren to some kind of charity event?” He meets Bdubs’ gaze. “How in the world did you end up with this?”
“It was in your mailbox, Scar.” Bdubs answers, resisting the urge to shake his head. “You know, the thing downstairs I always remind you about checking?”
“Oh, right. That thing.”

“Is that it? I can track them down if you’d like.” Mumbo offers, and Scar laughs.
“Oh no no no, it’s fine! See, I actually made him my personal bodyguard!” He exclaims, and Mumbo stares at him, dumbfounded.
“You did what?!” Mumbo exclaims, shocked. He takes a breath, as if to compose himself. “Scar, you know I consider you to be a highly intelligent man, and as you are my boss I’ll go along with whatever it is that you plan. But this? You don’t know that he won’t betray you! Goodness, what if he’s really just some spy from Dogwarts? What if this is all a ploy to kill you?”

Summary
Mumbo wants to tell Scar the truth, wants to tell him that Grian is stealing him away, that he’s got Scar wrapped around his finger and Mumbo hates it. He wants to tell Scar that it’s because he loves him, that he wants to be in Grian’s place, or that Grian is overstepping. But he can’t say any of that, because he’ll walk out of this room without an employer. So, he settles on, “It’s complicated.”
Scar makes a curious noise, “Just what are you hiding, Mumbo?” He asks, and his voice almost sounds soft with hurt.

Summary
With his heart pounding in his ears and his chest heaving as he breathes, he observes the room for any danger. There are no broken windows or ruined carpets. There’s no obvious signs of damage. There also hasn’t been any signs of a fight. No blood, no weapons.
Muscles easing up, Mumbo spots Scar sitting on his bed. He’s staring at Mumbo with wide green eyes, as if he’s a deer that’s been caught in headlights. The man looks completely fine. He’s dressed in one of his suits, though his tie hasn’t been done. It hangs around his neck idly still. Nothing appears to be wrong, despite how Scar had sounded on the phone. He’s not hurt, no obvious injury or blood. Mumbo meets his stare, and blinks. “What’s the emergency?”
“It’s horrible Mumbo!” Scar exclaims, and his green eyes look watery. “Grian’s sick!”

Summary
Hearing a noise by the door, Grian whips around. His breath catches in his throat as he sharply inhales, seeing Scar standing in the doorway. The man has one hand resting on the frame, staring at Grian with two wide eyes. He seems frozen as if he’s been caught doing something he shouldn’t.
And in this case? He has been.
Grian’s fresh shirt still isn’t on fully, bundled up by his elbows as he had been in the process of shoving his arms through the sleeves. Like a fool, he had mistakenly left his back to the door, allowing his scars to be seen clearly.

“No. And he won’t know a single thing.” Scar declares, an odd sort of commanding tone to his voice. “He’s to stay as far from this as possible.”

It’s only when Mumbo speaks that Scar’s eyes flicker over to him, focusing on him. And even when he finishes, Scar does not look away. Instead he continues to look at Mumbo, nodding at him. “That’s not too unsurprising. The drug itself is pretty underground, even more so than moopop.” He hums, “Unfortunately the drug has caught Xisuma’s eye, and mine by extension.”
“What exactly is it?” Grian questions, feeling out of the loop.

Without missing a beat, Grian repeats himself, “I know that you’re in love with Mumbo.”
“Ah… so I didn’t hear you incorrectly.” Scar mumbles to himself as he drags his hand down his face. His hand stops around his mouth, covering it as he seems to sit in embarrassment. Scar doesn’t need to verbally confirm it for Grian, not when his actions say more than enough. “May I ask what suddenly brought this uh.. statement on?” He asks, letting his hand fall from his face.
Grian frowns, “He loves you back, you know.” He points out, watching as Scar stiffens. “According to Bdubs it’s been years, actually. You haven’t acted on it.” He says.

The reality of his situation truly hits him, and Grian finds himself chuckling. Turning around, he moves to sit with his back against the door.
No one is coming for him.
He’s going to die here.
Such a realization would startle most people; it’d only cause them to worsen their panic, their desperation. Normally there’s some kind of begging, some kind of mantra of “I don’t want to die, please!” Yet Grian sits with this realization and he is calm. He’d even go as far as to say he’s accepted it.

Summary
It makes Grian curious, seeing as he’s been out of the loop for a few days. He turns over in Mumbo’s arms to look over at Scar, brows knitting together as he asks, “Busy as always I take it?”
Scar sighs, though it has a dramatic flair (as most things do with Scar). He moves himself closer to both Grian and Mumbo, holding his bandaged hand in the air and flexing it. He grimaces once, twice, before dropping it over Grian. “Mayoral duties never end, I’m afraid.” He replies. “Election season is nearly upon us and I have to prepare my campaign.”
Grian’s brows furrow, “You know, with how much the people love you, I doubt you’d have to campaign very hard.” He points out.
“Ah, one would think. But there’s quite a bit to it.” Scar says rather cryptically, not adding on.

A younger self who only knew how to handle rough things like guns and knives. A younger self who nearly cried when he saw his first flower blossom.
He sees it all in Grian.
He gives Grian what he hopes is a comforting smile, “We can do it together then.”

“Well, now I have. You’re very distracting, songbird.”

The tempo of the music picks up and suddenly Grian is being passed off to someone else. He slides into their arms, hands locking together. Hands slip around his waist and something is said to him, a greeting of some sort. Investigating them swiftly, his eyes scan the person in front of him. A man, blond hair, brown eyes, dressed in a navy colored suit.
No arm band. Grian pays him no mind, focusing his attention back to the people around them.
Scar told him to be on the lookout for anyone wearing a red arm band, and so far Grian hasn’t seen anything.

Scar pulls back but not before placing one last kiss below his ear. And as Scar pulls back, Grian sees the muted heat in his eyes. And god if he doesn’t feel the same heat. It’s nearly impossible not to, with how close he’s been to Scar all evening, dancing with him like this. This proximity to Scar sends his heart racing so loud that he hears it in his ears, and has his throat going dry.
And when Grian returns to looking around, he finally spots it. Just as Scar pulls back, Grian is grabbing him by the tie and tugging him down toward him. “Scar, six o’clock, to your right.” He whispers harshly, and Scar glances to the side.
Over to the right is their target, a red arm band on their sleeve. Bingo.
“Let’s move.”
Entering the ballroom are two people, both dressed in suits.
