Summary
“Have you run into merpeople before, Yunho?” Hongjoong asked, tilting his head at his second in command.
“I haven’t,” Yunho replied, eyes still fixed on the water.
“Hmm,” Hongjoong hummed, looking back down at the boy’s face. Most of it was covered by his matted and tangled hair, still damp in some places.
Hongjoong leaned forward, gently smoothing a clump of hair so he could see the boy’s eyes. They were closed, eyelashes fluttering gently against smooth cheeks.
“You won’t need your sword,” Hongjoong said with a smile, flicking his gaze up to Yunho.Or, Pirate Ateez do their best to help out a few mermen

Summary
“Here, take your shirt off,” Hongjoong suggested. “I don’t want to get dye on it accidentally.”
Seonghwa obliged, slipping the shirt over his head and neatly folding it. He placed it on the bed beside him before looking back up at Hongjoong.
This isn't the first time you've seen him without a shirt, the captain told himself strictly. Why are you acting like it is?
They both stared at each other for a long moment.

Summary
Seonghwa looks at him then, and Hongjoong begins to regret pressing the issue. There is anger in the merman’s eyes, as well as a small but significant amount of fear.
“Because I would rather not,” he says, voice tight.
“That in no way answers my question,” Hongjoong says. He considers this a sure sign that his last bit of common sense has left his body. “Why do you not want to swim?”
“It’s none of your business,” Seonghwa hisses. His posture is now defensive, and he hunches away from Hongjoong in the chair.
Unwilling to let the issue go, Hongjoong gets out of bed. He crosses the room, stopping in front of the desk. Seonghwa watches him the whole time, a wary look in his eyes.
“I am your captain,” Hongjoong states plainly. “If there’s something that’s bothering you, I need to know.”

Summary
"It's me, Hongjoong," he says softly, stepping close enough to lay a hand on his shoulder. "What’s going on?”
Hongjoong turns, taking Seonghwa's hand from his shoulder and bringing it briefly to his lips.
"I'm sorry, love," he murmurs, eyes soft in the lantern light. "I was hoping you would be able to sleep through this."
Seonghwa hums at that, glancing over at the three pirates who are watching with vague interest.
"Who are they?" Seonghwa asks, regarding the three of them with cold indifference.
"Friends," Hongjoong replies easily. "Old friends."

Adjusting isn't an easy process.
Hongjong knows this on some level, but reality still manages to slap him in the face at least once a day.

Summary
“Close your eyes.”
Hongjoong obeys immediately, and Seonghwa smiles as he moves a little closer to his mate. The ocean is still around them, only a few currents swirling a ways below them.
“What now?” Hongjoong asks after a second, turning his head slightly towards Seonghwa while keeping his good eye closed.
“Concentrate,” Seonghwa tells him. “Push past your thoughts and see if you can feel the ocean.”

Summary
Hongjoong is reaching out before he can remind himself that he shouldn’t, tugging Seonghwa close enough for him to melt against the captain.
“I j-just want to help,” he sobs into Hongjoong’s shoulder. “Why won’t you touch me or even look at me?”
Hongjoong stiffens at the question, enough so that Seonghwa backs out of his embrace so he can look him in the eye.
“Did I do something wrong?” Seonghwa pleads, tears streaking down his face. “You have to tell me, Joong. I have to fix it, I hate this-”

Summary
They called him Pirate King there first, miles below the surface.
Hongjoong doesn’t understand enough mer to know what is said, but he knows respect when he sees it. It is readily apparent in the eyes of the lord they are talking to every time he looks at the captain.
Something proud had flashed in Seonghwa’s eyes when he translated the phrase, and it still burned every time he was called by the title.
Hongjoong doesn’t tell him how it rings false.
There are no kings above the water, especially among pirates.
He is Captain. That is everything a king is, and so much more. He doesn’t need the title, and doesn’t know how to say he has everything he could ever want already.

Summary
“Is this about the stores?” he asks, gaze flickering quickly between San, Hongjoong, and Seonghwa.
Something that looks a lot like regret flashes across Hongjoong’s face.
“No, it’s not,” he says gently. “This is something else.”
Mingi swallows hard, trying and failing to keep from twisting his hands together nervously.
“It’s nothing bad,” Hongjoong is quick to tell him. “Just something different that I would prefer to tell you in private rather than in front of the rest of the crew.”
Not trusting his voice right now, Mingi just nods.

Summary
Someone is yelling nearby, their voice familiar and panicked. Seonghwa jolts as the person grabs his shoulder, hissing slightly as his arm is jostled.
“-hwa! Seonghwa, are you okay?”
Hongjoong sounds frantic, and he certainly looks the part when Seonghwa turns his head to meet his mate’s gaze. His hair is a dark grey from the rain, the strands hanging into his good eye and making it hard to see. He lost his eyepatch at some point, exposing the full length of the scar that cuts across his face.
“Are you okay?” he repeats when Seonghwa doesn’t answer, lowering himself to kneel on the deck.
“Joong,” Seonghwa murmurs, barely audible over the rain and fighting raging around them. “I’m pregnant.”
