Summary
Adam's eyes met the man's in a fleeting moment, and stayed fixed there, magnetized.
He was tall, and he wore an expensive-looking coat. His eyes were a deep, crystal blue, wrinkled lightly at the corners as if someone had just told him a joke. They held Adam's gaze with a curiosity that verged on recognition. His mouth was quizzical, on a knife's edge of smiling. Adam felt suddenly as if all the breath had been knocked out of him.
---
Adam Faulkner-Stanheight knew his own worth- that is to say, little-to-none. His girlfriend? Frustrated with him for wasting his life. His job? A complete dead end, working retail in December. His photography? Just a hobby, and one he was afraid to really pursue for fear of failing. And then Dr. Lawrence Gordon walked into his life, sending his world into a tailspin with his understanding smile, soft voice, incisive words, and the kindest eyes Adam had ever seen.
What Adam thought would be one more mindnumbing holiday shift brought a chance encounter that would change his life- for better or for worse.

Summary
The woman blinked, then smiled slowly, lips pulling over teeth that were charmingly crooked. Lynn's heart fluttered, absurdly. "They haven't given me my own name tag yet, this one's a spare. My name’s Amanda."
"Amanda." It was a good shape in her mouth, and the woman's smile only widened.
"And you're Lynn, right?"
Lynn wasn't wearing a nametag. Her brows furrowed, and Amanda's raised, prompting, and there was something so familiar about her–
Oh. Oh, shit.
----
After an interrupted hookup in a club bathroom, Lynn sees a familiar face in the hospital cafeteria. Takes place within the same universe as Till the Road and Sky Align, but can be read on its own.

Summary
It took a moment for Lawrence to compose himself, to remember how to breathe. “You look wonderful,” he said finally, letting his smile bloom fully over his face, heart leaping at how Adam’s eyes softened at the praise. “Your tie,” he managed, getting up from his wheelchair with no small amount of difficulty. “May I…?”
Adam’s voice was hushed. “Y-yeah.”
It would be so easy to kiss him, Lawrence thought, keeping his eyes on the tie as he straightened and tightened it. To lean down and fit their lips together, to swallow the soft sounds Adam would make for him. To kiss a line down his neck and even further, to slide the jacket off his shoulders and feel him tremble. To unbutton his shirt slowly enough that he would beg to be touched.
His throat bobbed, close enough to bite, and Lawrence said a short prayer to a God he didn’t even believe in anymore to grant him a modicum of self-control.

Summary
“Sleep well, then,” Lawrence said, rolling over away from Adam, not trusting himself to remain this close to him. He knew if he was given the opportunity, he would never take his eyes off the man, so he closed them tightly, shifting onto his back.
Sleep found him quickly, stealing over his exhausted body and burying him deep in a dreamless peace. He was aware of the warm body next to him, but only barely; Adam was a quiet sleeper, and a still one, and Lawrence, though unused to sleeping next to anyone else, didn’t find himself at all troubled by his presence.
Until two in the morning.

Summary
Adam hummed along softly to the song from his place next to him; Lawrence’s smile only grew.
“It really is beautiful,” he said. “I can see why you like it so much.”
Adam was looking at him, eyes wide and soft, seemingly unaware of how plainly his emotions were written across his lovely face, and Lawrence was seized suddenly with the familiar grip of fear, clenching around his throat.
You’ll ruin it. You’ll ruin him.

Logan was standing in the hallway, dressed in the exact sort of matching pajama set he’d once made fun of Lawrence for wearing, arms folded, looking at Lawrence with the same fond sadness he’d held him with at dinner.
“Lar, can we talk?” he said quietly.
It wasn’t fair that he was still able to take Lawrence’s breath away.
“Yes,” Lawrence managed, making himself smile. He knew it was a tragic expression from the way Logan winced. “We should, shouldn’t we?”

Summary
Adam had always been soft in a way that Scott wanted to dig his hands into– it was just as easy to make him smile as it was to get under his skin, and Scott had craved both ever since they were tiny. There was something so fucking addictive about knowing that he could make those huge eyes narrow in anger or fill with tears of laughter. It felt sometimes like he had something breakable in the palm of his hand, carrying it gently while the worst impulses in his brain whispered in his ear about how easy it’d be to drop it, to crush it.
Scott tossed back another gulp of beer, and closed his fist.

Summary
He wriggled up to prop his head on the pillow, giving himself a clear view as Lawrence mouthed down his chest. “I p-probably won’t last too long, anyway. Especially if you keep looking at me like that.”
“Like what?” Lawrence murmured. His eyes were wrinkled at the corners, his smile hidden as his lips wrapped around Adam’s nipple. “How am I looking at you, sweetheart?”
Overcome, Adam covered his face with his hand, peeking through his fingers to keep watching as Lawrence kissed his way slowly down his shuddering stomach. “L-like…like you want to eat me alive,” he said weakly, and Lawrence laughed, low and soft.

Summary
“Adam? she asked, and then fixed her gaze on Lawrence. Her expression shifted into something hard, her brows creasing. “Wait. Wait, is that–”
“Lawrence,” he said, extending the hand that wasn’t holding Adam’s for her to shake. “I’m Diana’s father, and–” A look to Adam, whose smile had wavered slightly at the sight of Amanda's expression before returning full-force at Lawrence’s glance. “And Adam’s boyfriend.”
It gave him a curl of warmth to finally say it aloud, and Adam gently squeezed his hand, clearly sharing in his joy.
“Boyfriend,” Amanda echoed, the word leaving her in a sharp exhalation. “Oh. Okay, then.”
That was when she hauled off and punched him squarely in the nose.

Summary
His trembling fingers, spread out and gripping the table behind him, found a familiar shape, and Adam breathed out a short huff as an idea floated into his pleasure-fogged mind.
“L-Lawrence,” he said, the name sticking in his throat like honey, “can– c-can I– is it okay if I d-do something kind of…weird?”
The doctor glanced up, eyes nearly glazed from under his pale lashes, and his lips curved into as much of a smile as he could manage with his mouth full when he saw what Adam was seeking permission to do. He nodded, the motion of it letting his tongue glide over him with a slick press that nearly made the younger man’s knees buckle.
Adam took another breath, and lifted his camera.

Summary
With a small hop and a grunt of effort, Adam hefted himself onto the counter, sitting to the left of the fridge with his legs dangling, grinning cheekily when Lawrence gave him a half-amused, half-exasperated glance.
“I’m not sitting on the cutting board this time,” he said in his own defense, picking up his mug and taking a deep swig of still-warm coffee. “I just like watching you cook.”
“You’ll distract me. You can watch from the table.”
“That view would just distract me.” He swung out his foot and gently tapped his socked ankle against Lawrence’s ass. “Seriously, though, thank you for making breakfast. It’s…it’s really sweet of you. I appreciate it.”
“Of course.” Lawrence finally located the oregano and tapped a respectable amount into the eggs. “I thought it fit the occasion.”
“Occasion?
“Our anniversary.”

Summary
Adam couldn’t stop grinning. “Hi,” he said quietly, smoothing a lock of hair off Lawrence’s forehead. “Happy New Year.”
He yawned, shuffling to rest his head on Adam’s pillow, breath tickling his earlobe from his proximity. “Happy New Year. What time’s it?”
“Eightish, I think.”
“Thank God I’m not working today.” Lawrence pressed forward, inhaling as his face met with Adam’s neck. “I’m too comfortable to move.”
Adam laughed, threading his fingers through his hair. “You can’t move at all?”
“I didn’t say that.” His hands traced down, thumbing over the line of Adam’s hipbone. “I just don’t want to get out of bed.”
A tingle of warm, drowsy arousal washed over Adam, feeling the steady weight of Lawrence’s broad hands as they palmed over his skin, drinking his fill. “We don’t have to,” he said as Lawrence rubbed a slow circle against his stomach. “We can– we can stay right here for a couple of hours.”

Summary
“Babe?” Lawrence’s voice was thick with stifled laughter, and Adam found his cheeks heating with a rapid blush.
“What?” He half-turned, wanting to see the amused twinkle in Lawrence’s eyes, as embarrassed as he was.
“Nothing, just– you’ve never called me that before.” The doctor shut his laptop and moved to the side of the sofa, a clear invitation for Adam to join him. He did without hesitation, curling up by his side with little regard for Virtute’s disgruntled huff at losing her pillow.
“You call me angel all the time,” Adam mumbled, watching as their cat hopped off the sofa and stalked indignantly towards her own kitty bed just visible inside the darkroom, perhaps sensing that her dads wanted the living room to themselves. “It’s– I dunno, it just kind of occurred to me that I don’t really…do that for you.”

Summary
A lump rose in Lawrence’s throat, stealing away his breath. Adam was reading from the book of poetry Lawrence had bought for him.
It was only a year and a handful of months ago, but his memory of Adam from that time was so different from the Adam he now was lucky enough to hold in his arms nearly every night. He’d been a fidgeting, awkward young man, lingering close to Lawrence as if starving for his touch but still too nervous to meet his eyes for long. That anxiety had melted somewhat in the comfort of their relationship, but he still looked at Lawrence as if he couldn’t believe his luck, as if Lawrence were some angel lighting on the earth, as if he were still sometimes afraid he’d leave again.
As if it were luck, or chance. As if Adam himself wasn’t the brightest joy of Lawrence’s life. As if he’d ever let him go.

Summary
John exhaled slowly, waited until the cloud of smoke and condensation dissipated entirely into the orange-tinted darkness above, and then took another drag.
The weed burned pleasantly in his lungs, a welcome distraction from the pounding in his temples. Tonight’s migraine had been a particularly agonizing one, but already he felt the pulsing ache of it fade; bless Amanda and her willingness to help him access that particular method of pain relief. Being on the roof helped, too– as much as he loved New York, he had to admit that the overwhelming sound did little to help when his head was throbbing in pain. Up here, the noise of the city quieted, dying from a constant shout to a soothing murmur. John closed his eyes, welcoming the tiny pinpricks of sensation as snowflakes landed on his upturned face.
All was silent– until he heard a creak, the metallic slam of a door, and a sniffle.

Summary
He found Lawrence’s overnight bag when he always put it, tucked in the corner of the bedroom. Adam gently rifled through, careful not to disturb the neatly folded change of clothes, the pajamas Lawrence always insisted on bringing even though he rarely ended up sleeping in them, his cardigan. His fingers closed around a blunt corner, and he drew the object out, expecting to find Lawrence’s pill caddy.
It wasn’t. It was a small black box, square, slightly rounded at the top and hinged on one side.
All the breath left Adam in a single moment. His head spun, and his stomach lurched hard, as if he’d dropped a thousand stories down. He opened the box slowly, and the glint of metal caught the light from the window. A plain silver ring with a small diamond embedded in its center was nestled amid blue velvet.
Lawrence had bought an engagement ring.

Summary
“Hey, it’s okay. It’s alright.” Adam moved his body in front of the screen, blocking it from Diana's vision as he wrangled with the remote’s plethora of buttons, trying to find the power button. Finally, the TV clicked off, leaving the living room in deathly silence. “Is it– was it too scary?”
She stared up at him, tears glimmering. “It’s– I-I didn’t know it was the H-Halloween episode,” Diana said. “My daddy– y-you need to call him. C-can you call him? Can– can I talk to my dad?”
His mind raced with the worst possibilities. “I– y-yeah, I can try. Why, what happened? Are you hurt?”
Diana shook her head. “N-no, I’m– is he okay? Is he– is he–”
An awful realization clicked into place.
Halloween. Lawrence. The accident.

Summary
“Get your clothes off,” Adam ordered, the second Lawrence opened the door to their apartment. The doctor barely had time to take in the sight of his boyfriend, cocooned in blankets on their overstuffed sofa, before Adam continued, somewhat shakily, “get over here, and come lie on top of me.”
Lawrence began to smile, sparks flickering to life in his lower belly as he obediently shed his coat and tie. “Eager today, hm?”
“It’s…i-it’s not really a sex thing.” At that, and at the tremor in his voice, Lawrence paused in the middle of taking his shoes off. He peered again at Adam, and this time he registered how red-rimmed his eyes were, how tightly he was clutching the decorative throw blanket he’d draped over his body and head as if it were a hooded cloak. “I just– I-I need to be as close to you as humanly possible. You make me feel safe, Lawrence, and…and I really need that right now.”
