But that doesn't happen.

And he did try. He tried the rubber band, the breathing exercises, the soothing music, everything else his counsellor recommended when his father walked in on twelve year old Kenji, his arms covered in blood, and did what he did best: cared without putting in the effort of actually caring.
Maybe that's why he can't stop. He's never had a reason to.
Until now. Now, he lives with his best friend-slash-brother, and his family, who have all been nothing but warm and welcome. He's happy here.
Yet, it isn't enough.

But the more she looks at herself in the mirror, the more she thinks it’s not too weird. It’s like when she cut her hair short when she was eight: it just took some time to get used to. The black and silver rental is a little scratched, but it looks kind of cool, a little cyberpunk... Yeah. Yaz could get used to this.

But seeing Darius in danger supercharges Kenji’s heart, and makes him do wildly impulsive stuff, like jumping in front of a mind controlled Carnotaurus, or tracking down those kids after school just to punch them in their ugly faces.
