Summary
A snatch of an old prayer sings through Tony’s veins:
"I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do—"
There is more to the prayer than that. More about the Virgin Mary and the saints and god.
But the bit that always hit Tony, when he was a kid with a kneeler digging into his knees in between church pews, with the scars and bruises of his father’s fingers staining his skin, with a hope in his chest that was being torn apart by the pressures put on him by Howard Stark and Obadiah Stane and the board—
There are so many sins that have buried themselves between his ribs, actions taken by a man who had to suture together a heart of iron.
But it is not God that he needs to ask forgiveness from.
No—the only people that Tony needs to beg forgiveness from are the people that he hurt.
And top of the list is this boy, who he has somehow led to the conclusion that he would ever take his suit away again.
(When Peter breaks down on the anniversary of Ben's death, Tony is there to commiserate—and maybe to help, in his own way.)

Summary
There’s a field trip. A fucking field trip, to Stark Industries, where Peter has had a fake internship for half a year now, and everything that Peter has been pretending is about to go up in smoke, because Mr. Stark hasn’t been speaking to him for ages—
Ned is ecstatic. “We’re gonna get to see your internship,” he crows, excitement brighter than Sirius in the sky.
Flash is laughing. “We’re gonna get to watch Penis Parker faceplant when we all see, once and for all, that he’s lying about that internship of his."
MJ is flipping Flash the bird, and Betty is scribbling away in her notebook for the newspaper, and Mr. Harrington is pulling Peter aside when the bell rings to say that he’s heard the rumors, Peter, and it doesn’t do good to the school’s reputation to lie about an internship when they’re in Stark Industries, and the building is collapsing again, concrete dust filling Peter’s lungs, and he can’t do this. Not this afternoon. Not the blindingly yellow field trip permission slip, not talking to Aunt May about getting permission to go to a building that he's supposed to have been going to for months, not the possibility of happening to cross paths with the superhero that took away his suit.

Summary
Spider-man doesn’t have anything but his webs, and he is running on fumes, his own ribs feel as cracked as Mr. Stark's, but that doesn't stop him from catching Captain America and the Winter Soldier against the side of the cave with his webs.
But Peter can’t focus on either of them.
All he can focus on is Tony Stark’s cracked helmet, the rasping rattle of the breath in his throat, the high-speed pitter-patter pace of his heart battering against his ribs, the single drop of blood on his mouth.
He has to get that shield out of Mr. Stark’s chest.
Peter might not be a super soldier. He might just be some kid from Queens.
But he has one last squeeze of strength left, hopped up on the adrenaline roller coaster rush of Tony Stark bleeding out beneath him—
So Peter grabs the edges of the shield, and pulls.
(After receiving an accidental distress signal, Peter shows up just in time to see Captain America put his shield in Iron Man's chest.)

Summary
Everyone who looks at Tony Stark only sees the mistakes, sees the reputation for bad decisions and how he nearly ran Stark Industries into the ground and nothing more than that. And while stakeholders speak with him at galas due to expectations and money and the like, there’s no reason why a random teenager off of the street is going to want to talk to the disgraced son of the illustrious Howard Stark, still a shining beacon enshrined in New York history.
And so Tony knows that the best course of action is to leave the kid to his studies and go back to his sad, lonely penthouse—
But then the kid opens his mouth and says, “Oh my god, you’re Tony Stark,” nothing but giddiness in his voice.
“Yeah, I am, kid,” Tony says, and even he’s surprised to hear that his voice has no edge to it. If anything, it’s amused. “And you are?”
“Peter Parker, sir,” the kid says, and for some reason, his cheeks are flushed, almost as if he’s…excited to meet Tony, and only a lifetime of media training stops Tony’s jaw from dropping clear off of his face and straight down to dig itself six feet under the tile flooring in here.
Because when was the last time that someone seemed genuinely excited to see him?
