When the second Robin called out for Bruce, sobbing under the downward swing of a crowbar, the third bird was holding his own against the Red Hood, fighting back and breathing steadily all the while. So when Tim says “fine” after drawing in an unwavering lungful of air, Jason knows he’s lying through his goddamn Bristol-perfect teeth."

He repeats it to himself that night, staring up at the ceiling of his room in Wayne Tower. He doesn’t like Kyle. He repeats it with each flex of his jaw as he chews breakfast, then lunch, then dinner. He doesn’t like Kyle. The thought follows him to work, tutoring middle schoolers about gerunds and participles and how to build a strong argument. He doesn’t like Kyle.
