Jason’s finger twitches on the trigger. His face responds like he’s the one at gunpoint.
“Who the fuck are you?” He demands.
Clark sighs.
“Well I told you, I’m Superman,” he says, “but if it rings any bells, they used to call me Superboy-Prime.”
The result is instant. Jason’s eyes shoot open and his finger presses to fire. Clark is in front of him before he’s finished. He pulls the gun out of Jason’s grip by the barrel, faces inches apart as he cranes his neck down to make them even.

The world is more complicated and wonderful and terrible than any information that was downloaded in his head in Cadmus could tell him. He began learning that fairly quickly, all things considered.
Some other stuff was more complicated to figure out. It’s hard, after all, to figure out the differences in your own experience of the world as compared to other people if you don’t have the language to do so. Hal Jordan was dying long before a mission went wrong and his heart finally gave out.
He was dying when he signed the divorce papers. Dying without making it anyone else’s problem.
No one Noticed.
Not Bruce. Not Clark. Not the Justice League.And Hal was fine with that because twenty months ago he signed away the right to have anyone worry about him.
He would have kept it that way, too If he hadn’t burned himself out saving the world. If he hadn’t collapsed hard enough that everyone finally had to look.
Now Bruce and Clark are hovering like they never spent nearly two years avoiding him. Acting like this is their burden to carry, like they didn’t already decide, once, that letting him go was easier than staying.
Hal doesn’t understand it. There’s no cure. If Oa hasn’t found one, there’s no point in pretending otherwise. He’s made peace with dying.
Bruce and Clark haven’t.
They refuse to give up on him the way they gave up on the marriage. And that more than the poison in his blood or the ache in his chest is what hurts the most.
Because Hal is still in love with them. And loving them while they fight to save him might be the one thing he can’t survive.
