Summary
Before formal introductions and full time work assignments could be dished out, all new scientists on Stratt’s Vat were treated to a engaging demonstration by Dimitri’s favorite American Crazy Genius. That he got to sit in on the ensuing explosion was just a bonus to watching Ryland Grace’s mind work. And, if he was extra lucky, Carl would share some of the candy he carried around for Dr. Grace.
Carl isn’t sure what is more interesting about his new role - his Principal using him as a sounding board and lab assistant on Bill Nye level experiments that somehow paved the way into genius applications for the Task Force, or watching a bunch of idiot new scientists quickly change their harsh opinions of the man after he caught them doing something stupid, though it was probably both. - Either way, he and Dimitri would share a sweet treat while enjoying the demolition of the newbies egos via Mild Mannered Middle School Science Teacher.

Summary
Dimitri loved his crazy American friend. Watching the ideas he came up with somehow work, regardless of what they were was like watching a sculptor create a statue. Somewhere the magic happened and you were left wondering when the art appeared from a block material.
This wouldn’t be a problem if it only happened when Dr. Ryland Grace had enough sleep, food, and a specific (Medical Regulated TM) amount of caffeine. The results of any experiment or idea were always repeatable when that happened.
Too much caffeine and the genius would leave behind one-off projects with limited usability outside of the intended purpose. So why did this assistant have another cup ready when Grace was nearly too hyper to stand straight?

Ryland Grace would rather be anywhere else. He’d even rather be listening to the SWoC (Staggering Waste of Carbon) explain, badly, his latest published work. Anywhere would be better than waking up, tied to a chair, and missing orientation with the team who should be working on Ryland’s greenhouse.
Ryland would feel worse for the Vat’s security team, who were no doubt being lectured by Eva Stratt (and probably Carl, too. I know it was you who scared the Biology Department, you’re not slick, dude), if he wasn’t expecting to have one himself when they finally came to get him.
Though he hoped they’d hurry up. His captor was insane.

Ryland Grace didn’t really want to go into detail about the 9 (“was it 9? Simon, do all of these count?” “If you have to ask, then yes, Ry, they do.”) times he was kidnapped. Though it seemed to come up naturally while discussing the tally and parameters breakdown while talking to Simon.

The Vat is stressed. Ryland Grace seems to be Kidnap Catnip, Carl can’t take any time away without someone trying to steal the biologist, and Simon and Grace seem to be laughing about whether some of the most stressful things to happen on the Project counted, or were disqualified on technicalities.

Ryland was thrilled about every new invention and project he contributed to for The Petrova Task Force and Project Hail Mary. That his fellow Task Force members seemed just as enthusiastic as he was just added to his pride at contributing!
Even so, the most recent of these projects, the Greenhouse (it deserves to be capitalized, it is going to change the world!) was one of the most amazing he had ever thought of! And Dimitri had promised to pull a team together.Now they just had to get it off the schematics board and reproducible!
Simon Anguilla-Fiesher had taken one look at the schematic on his boss’s desk and requested to join the project. Whoever had created this must be an angel. It would revolutionize how food was grown! He couldn’t wait to get started!
Or: How too much caffeine, multiple kidnapping attempts of varying degrees of success, a lack of self-care, and a gut feeling saved 1 man, inspired people at 2 conferences, and brought 3 brothers back together.( Now if those two would just kiss already…..)

Simon was fully aware he would be debriefing with Director Stratt the moment Dr. Grace was safe. He had known it would happen from the moment he stepped between an unknown danger and the most beloved person on the Gansu. He’d known and done it anyway.
What he hadn’t expected was how his life would change in response to this choice.
Though he would like some clarification on why he’s in a Conference room with the Leadership Team, Director Stratt, and Dr. Grace?, even though he’s pretty sure he’s too low on the totem pole, clearance wise.
