Summary
Wei Wuxian is at such loss he can barely breathe.
To have such a desolate thought at the forefront of his mind feels a bit too much like a disservice; an agonizing useless whisper amidst such a… complete and utter tragedy. What comes next, when the road ahead is empty and the sky hangs low and gray, dull as old ash? When there is no place left in this world that would ever dare to welcome them?

When he finally speaks, his voice comes out rough, scraped raw, barely audible over the relentless drumming of the rain. "Lan Zhan. Can I be selfish?"
For a long, terrible moment, Lan Zhan does not move. His expression does not change, keeping on that same impassive mask he had worn since they met at fifteen.
"Neither of us has ever been selfish," Lan Zhan says.
Wei Wuxian reaches up and cups Lan Zhan's face in his hands. "Run away with me?" he asks, and his voice breaks on the words, utterly unguarded. "Leave everything behind and run away with me?"

Summary
The grief of it sometimes eats him alive.
Wei Wuxian would never admit it to anyone but Wen Qing— which is just as well, since she was the one who carved out his Golden Core with steady hands and placed it where it would do the most good. For his brother to gain a life, in exchange for his own.
And yet, he is alive, and the mourning lingers.
Perhaps that’s why, after months of research and half-baked theories, Wei Wuxian finds it quite convenient that the most viable way to rebuild his Golden Core comes down to this:
“Oh, heavens,” Wen Qing mutters, pressing her fingers to her temples. "We need a man.”

Summary
Lan Sizhui did not wish for his father to be bound by eternal mourning— no, such a desire would be both horrendously selfish and terribly unfilial. Yet, he had never once conceived of his father's grief as something with an end, something that could be cast aside. The very notion of his mother's memory fading away, left only to the bad-mouther's and the tides of time, was unthinkable.
Where, then, had those years gone? The years in which his precious ā-die had taught him to play inquiry, the music reverberating within the Jingshi as they called upon a spirit so deeply cherished they could not bear to remain silent?
To cease mourning was one matter; an understandable one, perhaps, though still difficult to stomach. But to bring another omega into the household, to allow someone else to occupy the space reserved only to his father’s rightful spouse— to Lan Sizhui’s niáng-qīn? That, he could not tolerate.
Upon the honor of his mother’s undying soul, Lan Sizhui swore it: his father would not take a second wife. He would simply not allow such a shameless transgression!
He was not getting a stepmother! Not in this life!
