This AU is set in the dark underbelly of 1890s El Paso. Alma is a ruthless Madam who runs one of the seedier brothels in the Tenderloin District. Bruno has loyally tended the bar for his mother since he was 13–sometimes reading fortunes and sometimes sold by Alma to old men. He once left to pursue his dream of becoming a famous fortune teller and illusionist, but after Mirabel’s parents die when she is 5, he realizes can’t leave her there alone. He returns hoping he can protect her. Mirabel is about to turn 18 and will have to start working with her sisters and cousins in the brothel. When Bruno discovers Alma has auctioned Mirabel’s virginity to the highest bidder, he agrees to take it so she doesn’t have to lose it to a cruel putero.
Worse challenges arise when Madam Alma gets involved with a corrupt sheriff and the dangerous Bosque gangs that plague the city. Only with their love for each other can they hope to keep their souls alive long enough to escape.
In this fic, Bruno is aged down to 40, Mirabel aged up to 17/18.
