No, today the universe has blessed New York with regular rain, the simple liquid crystal-like mirages falling from the granite colored clouds coupled with soothing “pitter-patter” sounds.
Vertin stands at the steps of the museum, her thin fingers pulling her black umbrella to a snapping close. The museum seems shapeless yet large, and a crowd keeps filing in and out. She can’t see the faces of the people. She can’t tell if anyone is actually leaving with amazement or befuddlement—they’re all blurry and stream together in a unison of colors.
Vertin stares ahead at the door, calm and collected as per her flawless Foundation training.
Her lips part to finally speak, “Is this really 1999?”, she asks, voice monotonous as always yet laced with a hint of suspicion, “Or something else?”.————Or ————
Takes place after the chapter Tristes Tropiques. The Narrator and Vertin have a little tête-à-tête, and Vertin deals with some hard to swallow revelations about the world, future, and the people she’s gained and lost.
