Joel hiccupped. “I was trying to be big.”
“I know. And you’re allowed to try. But it’s also okay to stop trying. Especially when it hurts.”
He hesitated.
Joel didn’t respond, just clutched the edge of the blanket tighter.
“Can I sit with you?” Etho asked.
Joel nodded.
Etho climbed up carefully and let Joel curl into his side. Joel trembled for a moment, but then burrowed closer, hiding his face in Etho’s hoodie.
“You’re not a joke,” Etho said softly. “You’re Joel. And you won. And even if you hadn’t, you’d still be amazing. Because none of that stuff makes you more or less worthy of being little or needing care. Tough guys fall too.”
