Joel’s eyes flicked to the phone. The simple, familiar rectangle seemed to pulse with danger, a temptation, a threat. He knew if they called it, if he ended up trapped in another ward, medicated and locked away, it would only get worse. The last time, the sterile smells, the fluorescent lights, the endless white corridors, he had felt the rot deepen inside him, a slow, gnawing decay he could no longer ignore.

Etho shuffled off the bus, grateful to be free from the suffocating stench of whatever perfume the stranger next to him had been donning. The early morning air was crisp as it hit Etho’s lungs. A sheet of fog had settled itself out on the athletic fields. Despite wanting to stand here, staring out at the mist, he forced himself to look forward. A pit of dread claimed its own space in his stomach, threatening to push its current contents out the way they came. He trudged forward, watching as the doors gradually got closer, a sinister mouth preparing to swallow him whole.
