It took a minute for Bridgette to collect her thoughts. Her finger still traced her ring and there was a distant look in her eyes as she sorted out what she wanted to say.
“Just…thinking about what an idiot I am,” she confessed. “I’ve been in love with a boy who didn’t even like me. How much more of an idiot can I be?”
Nicole sighed. “You’re not an idiot, Bridgette.”
“I give everything of me to everyone. I work so hard to make sure I’m liked. At the end of the day, I guess I just feel…empty. What’s the point? I did everything I could and it’s never enough. Sometimes it feels like it doesn’t even matter what I do.”
Nicole paused. She wasn’t equipped to handle feelings. Even her own feelings were shoved down with jokes or sassy remarks. But when Bridgette looked at her with the saddest eyes she’d ever seen, she knew she had to muster up something. Because to her, Bridgette was the sun. And without the sun, the world was at its darkest.
