Indeed, anticipation was a familiar feeling to Haru whenever Rin was concerned, so maybe this question should have come to him as no surprise—but it did. Haru was never sure what he was supposed to be anticipating on the days he knew he’d see Rin, just that he ought to be ready for it—whether it be for a race or to compete in a petty contest. Maybe there was always more to it than just swimming or rivalry and he was too busy bracing himself to notice.
But he couldn’t think about that right now. He was too busy standing there, wide-eyed, in front of the one person who was unrelenting in his mission to keep changing his life.

"... You have frosting on your lip," he says and pulls out a handkerchief from his back pocket.
“Oh sorry,” Makoto says, flustered. Rin leans in closer, his eyes focused on Makoto's mouth, and just as he’s reaching up to wipe the mess away, Makoto pulls back, meets Rin’s eyes, and says, “Ah, wait, no need for that.”
Then his tongue darts out and sweeps his upper lip clean in a way that Rin couldn’t describe in a word other than pornographic.
Rin drops his handkerchief, and could only just gape at this heretofore unknown capacity for underhanded trickery, all his preconceived notions of Makoto remaining a sweet-faced conservative virgin dissipating like vapour. And they say Rin changed? Fuck that. Makoto is a manipulative bastard who does not fight fair.
“Rin?” Makoto asks, tilting his head inquisitively, like he didn’t just inadvertently seduce Rin with cream cheese and blowjob lips.
“I hate you,” Rin snarls and proceeds to push Makoto back into the wall and lick into his mouth.

Mikoshiba grins at the two of them, looking at Haru with a disturbing mix of awe and befuddlement. “You and Tachibana, and you and Matsuoka, it’s just something else man.”
Haru raises one eyebrow. “Something else?”
“I can’t explain it, it’s like Tachibana’s your doting wife, and Matsuoka’s your cranky girlfriend, and they’re… boyfriends.”

He pushes their foreheads together, a habit he’s come to employ when he wants to ensure that Rin doesn’t miss anything, almost as if he wants to fully impress his thoughts to Rin’s via physical contact. “You’re Matsuoka Rin, the boy who cries too much and loves so hard, the boy who makes people dream big, the boy who showed us sights we’ve never seen before. The boy who swept into our lives and reminded us that there are dreams we need to chase.”
Rin just stares, struck speechless. It’s all too much to take—but Makoto isn’t done yet.
“And you know what they say, right, about how you take on the world?”
Rin manages to speak past the growing lump in his throat, his voice just this side of gravelly. “Um… by storm?
Makoto’s smile is full of heart and it shines out of his eyes. “Yeah. And believe me, Rin.” His gaze is as tender as his voice when leans even closer and whispers: “…the world has never had a storm like you.”

It’s such a strange, unorthodox answer and would probably be pretentious if it came from anyone other than Tachibana Makoto. Rin understands perfectly of course. Makoto’s decision is difficult because...
“Both of them will make me happy,” Makoto whispers, meeting Rin’s eyes. His smile is breathtaking. “There are so many things I love in this world. It’s not fair that I have to choose.”
Over the years that he’s had a relationship with the other boy, Rin discovered that the key to understanding Makoto is to reconcile the simplicity of his happiness with the complexity of his heart. It doesn’t take a lot to make Makoto happy but the way Makoto loves is almost impossible to define, precisely because he puts so much of himself into it. And Makoto is a complicated person.
Rin understands what he’s saying anyway. “So you’re not. Choosing, I mean.”
Makoto shakes his head.
