Summary
Even the most powerful have their weaknesses. Volenta has more than a few of her own. One such weakness being her husband. Another - her love for toying with others. Her station permits it, but it doesn't come without consequences, because Lady Inquisitor soon finds herself entangled with another man. And she doesn't know just what events will unfold when the man she's married to gets assigned to look over the Koronus Expanse.
In the 41st millennium, there's only war. Be it on surfaces of planets, on the decks of spaceships or... in personal lives. And those battles are not easily won.
“Do you think she’s embarrassed, Heinrix?” Xavier asks and Volenta bites her bottom lip, restraining a chuckle threatening to emerge. She wants to give Xavier this chance to flex the power he has over her and if the woman has to be honest with herself – watching Heinrix struggle in this situation is just beyond entertaining.
“I don’t think I’m fit to answer this question for her, Xavier.” The words come out through clenched teeth and Xavier scoffs again. He’s bemused by Heinrix’s attitude and is starting to get irritated.
“And yet you are asked to answer.”

“I get the impression that you think I’m soft-hearted.” Crescens walked toward her desk, Heinrix Van Calox following behind her with his typical, steely expression. Her office was a more dignified place to have this conversation than in full sight of the bridge crew.
“You place a high value on mercy. It’s admirable. In moderation.” He answered stiffly, watching her ascend the two steps that led up to the space her desk was situated in. He followed suit.

Summary
Once the lift was descending to her quarters and they were out of sight of the officers and crew, Branwyn gave Idira's arm a grateful squeeze before letting go and half-collapsing into Heinrix.
“Lord Captain—” he said, alarmed.
“She's a telepath, Heinrix, she already knows that I—”
“It's true,” said Idira.
“Not my main concern at present,” he replied, worry evident in his voice.
“—and I am in too much pain to pretend I don't need more help,” Branwyn finished, drawing a ragged breath.
Heinrix looked from Branwyn to Idira, slight frown creasing his forehead.
“Just carry her, iceman. I won't say anything.” Except to Cassia, maybe Jae. Kibellah if Idira found her around.
Sister Argenta if she was bored.
A flicker of something—maybe gratitude—and he swept Branwyn up into his arms, murmuring apologies when her breath hitched. The chill in the air was clinging to them and when the lift stopped, he carried her past her bedroom and her office into her Ablution Chamber.

Summary
There's a barrier between Diana von Valancius and Heinrix van Calox. One that has risen after the events in Commorragh. He tried to give her space, let her approach him, but his patience has ran out. It's time to have the difficult conversation that should have been had weeks ago.
“No, it wasn’t. Diana-“ Heinrix pauses, then inhales deeply and slowly exhales as if trying to calm the emotions roiling within. “It wasn’t done because I thought we might die. Not on my part. And I was hoping not on yours either.” Lips press into a thin line before he speaks again. “But if that’s how you perceive what happened, I can accept that. You just need to tell me that’s how things are. And I will never bother you again.”
She could and Diana knows that he wouldn’t question it. Just a few simple words. To tell him that it meant nothing, that it was just a tryst, a heat of the moment or a desperation of one. She could lie.

Summary
It was well within the rights of his Lord Inquisitor to requisition Rogue Trader Theodora von Valancius into his service. That said, both he and Lord Inquisitor Calcazar knew it was wise to keep Theodora happy; entire systems kneeled in deference to her, and her retinue largely consisted of those more loyal to her than the Imperium. Her request was trivial for one such as Calcazar and unthinkable for anyone else — one of the few remaining von Valancius heirs was being held by the Inquisition, and she wanted him placed safely into her custody. She had traced her lineage through a long line of cousins to an accountant named Skell born in the Calixis, and then to her son, Yonah Skell. He was in the custody of an Interrogator of the Ordo Hereticus, and a mere Acolyte could hardly refuse the request of a Lord Inquisitor. Heinrix was being sent to simply impart the message.

Summary
“Charael,” he wheezed. “You’re alive.” The relief in his voice was so disorienting that for a moment she wondered if there was some other hallucinogen she’d been subjected to without her knowledge. Though unlike the spine-slug delirium, this one stayed consistent with her understanding of the world around her.
Regardless, the Heinrix that was trying to pull himself upright was the one she had been hoping to find all this time. This was the man she recognized from Janus, from the crashed Black Ship, from across the Regicide board. As she thought, though she still couldn't explain why, all that anger she'd been carrying drained away and she was left lying there feeling both more foolish and more glad than she ever had in her long and wretched life. If this was the final stage of some deathly poison, then it was a kinder end than she ever imagined Commorragh offering her.
On the off chance that this was reality, Charael cleared her throat and said, "Heinrix, we need to leave."

Summary
“Their names concern me less than their eradication.”
“As is proper, Sister Argenta. But it can be easier to fight a thing when you know what it is and what it does.”
Argenta made the sign of the Aquila. “Valuable but dangerous knowledge can be a burden, Lord Captain.”
Branwyn looked ahead to where Heinrix was in quiet conversation with Kibellah, kneeling by a crumpled body. “Yes,” she said softly.
“Msster van Calox carries it well.”
“He does,” she agreed. “But it pains him, all the same.”
“...Will he not let you share his burden?” asked Argenta.
“No.” Branwyn tugged at her hood. “No, he will not.” There was a quiet affection mixed with exasperation, something wistful.
Heinrix seemed to sense the scrutiny, or had heard their footsteps, and looked their way. His gaze settled on Branwyn, the brief twitch of a reassuring smile gracing his features before his more standard neutral expression settled back in.
Argenta needed to stop borrowing Cassia's novels. The Navigator had kept her confidence so far, but it was only so long before Idira found out, and then Argenta would know no peace.
