“I am aware. I simply… Well, aboard the Black Ship, I didn’t want my condition to be noticed, either. But you did, and it was… something I hadn’t known I needed. I thought that now might be a similar situation, and I could return the favor.” Heinrix paused, and Pandora heard a rustling of cloth as he shifted his weight. “But, if I misjudged, please tell me. I don’t mean to make things worse.”
His words disarmed her, leaving her floundering as her anger faded. She couldn’t relax, not while he had caught her here. But how was she supposed to turn him away?

“Very good, Lord Captain,” Vigdis’s cool professionalism was uniquely reassuring. Branwyn might as well have asked her to inquire with Janris about the amount of recaf in the Voidtreader’s inventory.

Branwyn was not relishing the prospect of a third encounter and she shivered as Heinrix opened the door panel for the entrance to the underground bunker.
“You're scared,” Marazhai prodded quietly. He sounded amused.
“And?” Branwyn replied, occupying herself by swapping the ammo in her revolver. Jae had given her something special for just such an occasion. A little spark to light up the dark nights without me, shereen.
Much like Einrich, she had a gift for turning anything into flirting.
Heinrix spent a few moments murmuring appeasements to the machine spirit and messing with the wires before the door slid open.
Darkness waited inside, red emergency lights offering enough vision to mark the stairs and broken lift down but little else. Branwyn started to step forward, but both Heinrix and Marazhai moved in front of her.
“Absolutely not,” said Heinrix.
“We're agreeing again, Interrogator,” said Marazhai. “It’s becoming a habit.”
Heinrix wore the look of a man asking the Emperor for patience but hoping not to receive it. A muscle in his jaw twitched.
