Sophie always had longed to touch magic and glimpse it, even though she thought she was destined for far more simpler things. But when a wizard whisks you away into the sky, things change.
She would always say for the better—as she would never give up Howl, Markl, or Calcifer for anything in the world, they were family after all—but sometimes as she stared over the landscape of the rolling hills of the Wastes from the lawn of their flying castle, she longed for far simpler things. Before magic, before love, before she found this family.
In a house of magic, Sophie can't help but long for the little things that aren't magical. Like the craft of sewing, something she thought she had left behind in her past life.

“That’s awfully noble of you,” Sophie said as she took the card and book that were slipped back to her. “Thank you.”
And with that she left with a smile on her face and a book in her hands, the picture of Howl’s grinning face stuck in her mind.
Her cheeks flushed a warm pink and she blamed it on the chill of the night.
A new bookstore opens in town, and Sophie can't stop returning. She says it's because of the books, but maybe it's because of a little sometime called a crush.

But when it came down to it, Howl loved Sophie more than he loved the fated person on the other side of his string. There was no doubt about it.
Now Justin, the blond-haired man on the other side of Sophie's string, was here. And neither of them quite knew what to do.
Sophie and Howl aren't soulmates. Their red strings aren't tied together, and the universe has other plans for them. But sometimes stars decide to burn, so Sophie and Howl choose to love each other anyway.

“Well, I don’t know what a ‘zombie’ is,” Sophie said, “but it’s clear to me that whoever buried you was well within their rights to leave you here without a headstone, if this is the kind of person you were before you died.”

A missing wizard, who she was rather inconveniently in love with, to fret over. A new business, albeit one without many customers, to run. And, of course, a king, his army, and his ruthless sorceress to elude.
It was quite a lot to manage all on her own.
So who could say how many bud vases, with only a single bloom to fill them, Sophie had missed?
