Howl had hesitated, letting the silence linger as long as he dared. This was the part where he was supposed to say something witty, something charming, something befitting that reputation of his. But his voice caught in his throat, and when his lips parted, all he could manage was a whispered, “Be safe.”
It was only after she’d finally bid him goodbye, her figure disappearing into the doorway of the bakery where Lettie worked, that Howl had allowed his hands to shake.
