She hung her coat up and unpinned her hat, moving slowly as she did so. She didn't turn the lights on but she knew her own home well enough that she could return home and get from the hallway and to bed with her eyes shut if she chose to do so.'

There was still a part of Irene that wanted to apologize, that wanted to point out all of the ways she had hurt and failed him over the past few days alone. There was still a part of her that wanted to ask him if he was certain that he wanted to be with her despite everything. There was still a part of her that was insisting on detailing all of the ways she might lose him someday, all the ways that allowing herself to have this now could end up being horrifically painful.
She was going to pitch that part of herself into the sewers and then leave it in this alternate for good measure.

She gasped and sat up abruptly, Kai’s hands...or her own hands...falling off of her shoulders. Her body sat across from her, crouched in a more elegant way than she’d have thought her body capable of, and that sealed it for her. “Kai?”
"Yes," he said immediately, actually managing to sound a bit irritated despite the utterly impossible circumstances that certainly seemed to more than justify her question. "Are you all right?"
Irene decided to do what she did best in situations where she was uncertain of herself: dodge the question altogether. "You are -- in my body."
"Yes," said Kai. "And you are in mine. And I am going to murder Silver very painfully if it turns out that he isn't already dead."

That wasn't quite how he looked now -- it was somehow both better and worse. He was working so hard to keep up appearances that he almost managed to pull it off. But she knew him well enough to see the cracks in the façade, to see how utterly exhausted he was by it, and that was a stunningly intimate thing to realize.

The impulse to declare herself unclean, damned for life, had only grown since Vale’s revelation. It seemed every few minutes she came to another related realization that made her question her very existence. A part of her wanted to tell Kai all of these things at once, to hurl them at him like a rain of bullets, to see if he could withstand. That same part of her said that he was going to leave her when he’d managed to fully think the situation through, would have no choice, so they might as well get it out of the way now. But the larger part of her was too tired and too afraid.
