Summary
Lake flips over a piece of litter and finds that it's a photograph. They don't really follow school sports, but judging by the collection of swim caps and matching Pupfish jackets, they assume it's a photo of the swim team. It takes them a second to find Jesse without the messy hair to go by, but they eventually spot him in the back, his characteristic grin half-obscured by the head of the senior standing in front of him.
He shines so brilliantly in the picture that they still don't know how they hadn't managed to see him when he was alive. Even now, despite only being a wispy remnant of what he once was — a painting of fire and starlight rather than starlight itself — he's still more vibrant than a blooming summer. And it kills them every time they have to wonder what he must've been like when he was tangible, and alive, and whole.
Because somehow they'd missed it. Missed him.
