Summary
"Blanche’s words had brought tears to her eyes for what felt like the thousandth time in the past few months, and she was finding it hard to pull herself together. She was overcome by too many emotions to name, but one of them had to be confusion.
*It is the only thing I love…except Judith*
Maybe it wasn’t so much that Judith didn’t understand, but she knew she wanted—no, needed—to respond somehow. This felt like a tipping point in their relationship, and Judith couldn’t just let it pass her by without letting Blanche know how she felt too."

Summary
Blanche is well aware that she is being selfish, letting Judith put one more item on her to-do list that has nothing to do with her actual work. No, not simply letting—asking it of Judith. But as Judith stares down the salesgirl who’d had the audacity to dress Blanche in something best left to a Wordsworth poem, Blanche can’t find it within herself to regret the imposition.
“Formidable. Consequential.” Heat spreads out from somewhere deep inside Blanche. Judith’s gaze darts back to hold Blanche’s own. “Elegant.” Her lips twitch up into a small smile meant only for them, and Blanche hides the way her hand trembles with another sip of her drink.

Summary
"A part of Judith wants to defend Blanche, not caring that anything she says will fall on deaf ears, but she finds that words fail her. How to explain the pleasure of dark, quiet offices and one-sided lunches, of ravenous eyes and a razor-sharp tongue that every so often lays honeyed words at Judith’s feet? Judith simply gives Julia a closed-mouth smile. 'We get by.'"

Summary
"The hot chocolate and pastry are decadent enough on their own, but time is the real indulgence. Judith meant it when she told the waiter she wouldn’t be leaving for a good long while. Sure, she’s working even now, but the air around her feels lighter than it ever could deep in the halls of Knopf where everything is dark carpets and gleaming mahogany. The sun is brighter here than it seemed to be back in New York and Boston, too. Hell, even the food seems remarkable—if only for its arrival with no fuss, no quibbling over seasoning and American customers and French authenticity, no endless bickering from two women far too old and behind on their deadline for Judith to tolerate it with good humor."

Summary
Blanche's fingertips find their way to Judith’s cheek in the silence that follows. “Where would I be without you?”
“You’d be right here.” Judith dips her head. “Maybe with a bit more competition from another publishing house for some of your authors, but…”
“I would have lured you away. They could never have offered you what I did.”

Summary
"A flash of a smile is all it takes to have a cigarette and a light, and Judith lets the slow, repetitive rhythm of inhaling and exhaling settle her thoughts. The frustration hardens into anger. The anger crystallizes into the beginnings of a plan.
She’s paying a cab driver outside Blanche’s front door before she’s even thought past the first step of her plan.
Alfred could be home. Blanche could be out. Blanche could be asleep. Well, that’s unlikely. Judith’s fairly certain Blanche wasn’t lying when she said she never sleeps. She’s never once been unavailable when Judith has needed her. There are, however, still a dozen good reasons not to have come."

"Why are you doing this?"
Because you need this. Because I need you. Because I care. Because I love you.
"Why do you think?"

Summary
They’d barely touched, or even conversed, communicating with as few glances as possible. The only best thing they had in common was an unspoken loyalty to Julia. They’d never spoken about it further beyond that. They never needed to. In a professional light, they were acquaintances at best.
Avis had even claimed it to be sisterhood the day after. Alice chalked it up to that alone and called it a mere chance.

In which Avis makes an imprint of a first impression on Alice, amidst awry times.
