Fuck, if Kaveh asked him how he looked right now, theres nothing that would stop his drug addled brain from getting down on one knee. On a Friday, at 5 pm.
Unfortunately, the gods never smiled kindly upon Alhaitham, as he heard Kaveh slip out a “oh, by the way, does this look okay?” as he continued to adjust his golden locks that fell around his face.

What constitutes a fairytale?
Many would offer the basic answers: a hero who slays a monster to save a damsel in distress, or goes on a journey full of the strange and fantastical.
To Kaveh, a fairytale meant peace, quiet, and being able to work with zero issues. To him, a fairytale was romance, magic and wonder given form.
To Alhaitham, fairytales were not real. After all, what was so strange and mystical about a land that already had magic and monsters to begin with? Fairytales, to him, only had merit if they were proven to have been true.
That's why, to him, their mundane life together in this small Atelier in the countryside was already more than enough. If he could call it that, this was his fairytale.

It felt right to be with Alhaitham, this resolute stranger, even if it was just to linger next to him, sun overhead, voices of patrons nearby overlapping. He would do this. But where was this hesitance springing from?
Asking someone on a date, well, he must have done this before, surely, even if it surfaced as a blank. Even if he hadn’t, there was a first time for everything. The hesitance curdled, a harrowing sensation, akin to erosion in the gut of his being. Just what was this?
He couldn’t recall, but no longer could he stall, with time pressing and Alhaitham’s presence threatening to separate from his side, where he was the only receiver of that pressing, omniscient gaze.
“Listen,” he began. Alhaitham’s expression failed to change, and neither did Alhaitham move. Only by speaking it could Alhaitham’s mind be known. “I hope I’m not being too forward- that is, I hope I’m interpreting things correctly, but I’d like to do this again, if you’re also interested.”
(An amnesiac Kaveh professes his interest in handsome stranger Alhaitham. Once recovered, Kaveh is compelled by his and Alhaitham’s mutual honesty to reveal his true feelings despite his own self-doubts.)

Water cascaded onto his hand, blanketing his palm in a brilliant cerulean blue. Drops trickled off his fingers joining the rest of the river flowing blow.
He couldn’t help but be drawn into the graceful serenity of the roaring falls. So peaceful, so constant. If waterfalls were human their creativity would surely last like an endless spring. I wonder if such a feat is possible to achieve with our humanity, Kaveh thought.
His cohort did not follow. “Just hurry up and grab the thing already.”
Kaveh smiled tauntinly as he looked over his shoulder. “Awh, it’s unlike you to be worried about me. Why now?”
The expression Alhaithem made looked like Kaveh added a bit more grey to his already silver head. “I’m dreading the tangent I’ll inevitably hear on our long walk to the meeting, ‘if that damn branch held up a little longer I would’ve had it, you know!’”
“Oh shut up. First of all, I don’t sound like that. Secondly, the suitcase is literally right here - there’s no need to rush. You know, you worry too much! This is why the other scholars don’t like to work with you. Archons above, get a clue for goodness-!”

Alhaitham had been distant. He left early and came home late. He skipped meals. Kaveh had been called many things in his life, but he was not an idiot. Every time Kaveh worked his way through the facts, he arrived at the same conclusion. It was not a pleasant conclusion, but it was the right one in all the ways that mattered.
Alhaitham wanted him gone.

There was something unexpectedly beautiful about Alhaitham, Kaveh noticed the longer he sketched. His subtle expressions were often lost on the masses, but Kaveh could easily capture them here. The slight twitch of his lips, the quirk of an eyebrow, the faintest crinkle around his eyes. Alhaitham was more expressive than anyone gave him credit for. You just had to look.
Alhaitham practices his swordsmanship. Kaveh makes the mistake of watching him a little too carefully and absolutely spirals, giving a masterclass in overthinking.
