You Majesty,” repeated one of the men. “The Akielons come.”
Thunder sounded in Laurent’s ears; he struggled to keep his hands from forming fists as his heart pounded. So quickly, after all these years, his fear exploded. His fear and his hurt and his anger. Yet—how could the others stand there calmly? “They come?”
“Your Majesty—a group—we have a letter—" The man who had spoken held up alongside his still-bowed head a roughened, wrinkled, but clearly sealed, parchment.
Laurent took it. “How big is a ‘group’? How far away are they? And whence do they come?” The other scout started to speak, but Laurent snapped: “Lift your heads when you speak; I need to hear you more than the paving stones do.” They obeyed.
The second scout continued, “Nearly forty men, Your Majesty, traveling light, no wagons. Crossed into Belloy yesterday afternoon. They will be here by this evening. And—Your Majesty—” The scout hesitated. “The King is with them.”

The family is gathering from around the world to celebrate, starting with dinner at the elegant home of Damen and Laurent, his parents. Somewhat to the family’s dismay, Damen’s parents had announced their intention to attend. Dismay because of their estranged relationship with their son; they had not attended Damen’s undergraduate or graduate graduations, nor Damen and Laurent’s wedding 10 years earlier.

Crown Prince Auguste of Vere, tired and sore from days on horseback, returns late at night from a very long trip to the country of Patras and checks in with Queen Hennike before heading for bed. His younger brother Laurent--brilliant, sharp-tongued, funny, eager, sincere, impatient, precocious-- adores him, but Auguste just doesn't have the energy tonight. Tough for him.As far as I know, IRL there is no fairytale The Princess and The Ogre King.

Laurent didn't have much hopes for his own happiness, not with his father and uncle dictating who he was to marry and mate. Meeting Damianos of Akielos at a peace summit was such an unexpected stroke of luck that he started to hope for something more despite himself.
Damen had heard the tales of Fated Mates often enough to know that they had to be exaggerated. Two people couldn't be that dependent on each other without withering. The moon was bright and full that night, despite it still being very early, it almost looked like daylight, but it was paler, softer. It was beautiful. He closed his eyes, and barely noticed that the river singing was slightly and subtly changing, turning into almost understandable words and sentences, a voice almost human but still mystic, it wasn't the river who was singing anymore.
