Summary
It's the 31st century in the DC Universe. The Legion of Superheroes are the premiere superhero team in the galaxy. Any yet, sometimes they need backup, to handle threats that they're too busy too. Enter five Legion hopefuls. Brek Bannin, a bored but ambitious teenager from the planet Tharr who leaves to seek out adventure, can generate ice and snow at will, though he's not great at it. Staq Mavlen, a well-meaning but impulsive boy, is sent away from his life and girlfriend by his parents for a better life, but is granted destructive fire powers by a mysterious meteor. Ral Benem, a socially awkward outsider, comes from the planet Mardru and gained plant powers after falling into a vat of hydroponic serum as a child. Lydda Jath comes from the dark planet of Kathoon, where she ingests a mysterious strength serum to save her father from the space pirate Roxxas. And Dag Wentim is a Zwenian immigrant who has fallen into a bad crowd after his parents' death. Together, their fates converge in a high school in Metropolis as they band together as Polar Boy, Fire Lad, Chlorophyll Kid, Night Girl, and Stone Boy in the Legion of Substitute Heroes.
