Lyrei shook her head and smiled. “You’re already feeding me dinner. I think that’s more than enough.”
“I do have one more set of hands than you do,” she laughed, wiggling all of her fingers theatrically. “I’m perfectly capable of multitasking.”
The queen struggled not to laugh too much as she swallowed the vegetables in her mouth. “Alright then, if you insist, you can forge my signature and add my comments to the margins of each page once I’ve finished reading and approving the documents. Iris is sleeping in my dominant arm and I don’t have the heart to move him so I can write things legibly.”
“How bold of you to assume a perfectly law abiding citizen such as myself would know how to forge your signature, your majesty,” she teased.
“How bold of you to assume I’m unaware that you’ve done it three times this past week,” Lyrei smirked.

The overwhelming colours of the evening moved around Xenia as she chased her girlfriend beneath the arches made almost entirely of yellow roses and ivy, their laughter floating on the breeze. The gardens glowed. The mixture of golden, red, and green leaves flashed by, each one blazing like sparks caught in the updraft of a fire. A scarlet carpet unrolled before them, rich and flawless velvet over the marble mosaicked paths. Rising from the freshly trimmed grass, the brown, tangled roots breathed a bluish mist that reduced the farthest trees' trunks to ghostly silhouettes, yet left their foliage's luminous hues untouched.
The queen’s long teal dress made entirely out of silk spiralled out behind her as she ran, her long flame coloured hair sparkling in a multitude of coppery hues beneath her diamond tiara. Every shadow and fleck of setting sun swayed, dipped, and rolled across the private gardens the way a room did after one too many cocktails, and entwined through it all, the colliding scents of the city; Autumn’s smokey wood fire and Spring’s floral cherry blossom, Winter’s icy snowmelt and Sumer’s fresh fruits.

The contrast of the autumnal colored flowers she chose, against her cool ashen skin, was breathtaking as the eventide moved in. Her smile grew warm and fond, as we reached the small headstone.

Technically speaking, anyone else would receive nothing short of a life sentence if they’d to drag Her Majesty into the secret passageways that were woven throughout the palace, and then outside through the dungeons — and that was if Ruelle didn’t fatally stab them before Lyrei could pass the sentence. But it was far from the first time Xenia had whisked her away from court without any prior warning or co-ordination with the armed soldiers who had become her shadow.
Kidnapping the Queen for the evening might’ve been a fools errand; she couldn’t guarantee her safety, nor could she predict the pandemonium that would ensue had her retainers to figure out she wasn’t locked in her study; but it was necessary. Every girl thought about living in a palace. Few ever pondered living in a cage and crowns far too often did queer things to the heads beneath them, so Xenia had made it her personal mission to preserve as much of Lyrei’s sanity as possible until her final breath, or for however long she reigned... whichever came first.

The Queen stayed silent as she poured them both a cup of lavender tea. Xenia hummed gratefully as she handed her one and Lyrei met her gaze. Like the sun on the ocean on a mid summers day, her eyes sparkled. She had the deepest eyes she’d ever seen on a person, like a whole world went on inside that head at any given moment. “You.”

“Lord Ubel, I suggest you drop this subject,” Xenia cut in. Standing at the right hand side of the throne, she looked every inch the most dangerous spy from the Court of Queen Lyrei, down to the subtly threatening smile pulling at the corner of her beautiful mouth. “Her majesty has given you her answer, multiple times. To think that you have any right to make decisions about who she shares her body with and attempt push her into agreeing to something like this, when she has made it quite clear that she is uncomfortable, is appalling behaviour.”
