Summary
“He said that, because he’s always been trying to help his friends, he doesn’t know who he is without them. Without being able to help them. And, like, I get it, but that seems a little intense, right? That this kid has built his entire identity not just on how other people see him, but, literally on how useful he could be to them?! I dunno, it’s just—” Lars stops suddenly. “Are you…okay?”
It’s not until he asks this that Pearl realizes that there are tears welling up in her eyes, notices the way her hand has flown over her mouth, clutching it.
Pearl finds common ground between her and Steven. She wishes she hadn't.

“He said that, because he’s always been trying to help his friends, he doesn’t know who he is without them. Without being able to help them.” He pauses. “And, like, I get it, but that seems a little intense, right? That this kid has built his entire identity not just on how other people see him, but, literally on how useful he could be to them?! I dunno, it’s just—” Lars stops suddenly. “Are you…okay?”
It’s not until he asks this that Pearl realizes that there are tears welling up in her eyes, notices the way her hand has flown over her mouth, clutching it... (It’s a loaded gesture for her, admittedly, but there’s no gag order that compels her now, just habit, just love, just concern, just aching, aching similarity…)
.
Compartmentalizing is not the same as repressing, Pearl thinks. Namely because in the former, one actually takes the time to unpack whatever unpleasant thoughts and feelings had brought them to wherever they are. It’s a distinction that she’s admittedly struggled with in the past. But not now. And as soon as Lars disappears around the bend, Pearl succumbs to the panic. Lets herself sag for a moment, but then has the wherewithal to realize that if she’s going to do this, she should do it inside the Temple. (All she needs is for Steven to descend the stairs for a late-night snack or glass of water, see her wailing from outside the window, and then take it upon his own still-too-young shoulders to comfort her, like she had unwittingly compelled him to do so many times when he was a child…No. Best to be in her own room, where there’s no chance he’ll see…)
She enters the Beach House and crosses the living room and kitchen quietly, with the same gossamer gait she’d used two eras ago, back when she danced for and not with Diamonds.
When she is, finally, safely alone in her room in the Temple, the anxiety grips her once again, carries her down to the floor, and this time, when the tears push out of her eyes, when her hands fly to her face, she doesn’t stop them.
Steven.
For so long, she’d hoped…dared to dream…that some small part of her had rubbed off on him, that she’d inspired him…
And now it seems that she had, in all the wrong ways.
(She too, had once constructed an entire identity around her ability to be useful. It had taken millennia for her to unlearn, she’d only eventually been able to do it with his help…and once she had, she was so busy reveling in her own liberation, her own growth…)
(How had she not seen what was happening to him?)
The answer, when it comes to her, finally, is another punch to the Gemstone. She hadn’t seen it, because she’d caused it.
Well, she hadn’t caused it alone. Once, she might have been narcissistic and self-martyring enough to pretend—even believe—that she had, but it had in actuality been all three of them, the way they’d made him carry the burdens of their millennia of baggage, the way she’d pushed her bottomless grief into his all-too-eager-to-help hands…
(He’d wanted to help!)
(He’d been a child.)
The line between support and self-sacrifice is so achingly thin…she of all people should know…
(Once, she’d unwittingly tried to turn Connie into a pearl, and the thought of that now still makes her want to collapse in on herself. The thought that she—they all—might have done the same thing to Steven…)
Pearl takes a grounding breath, slowly pulls her hands down from her face. These angst spirals—familiar and comfortable though they may be—will not solve the problem, will not help Steven.
The question must be what to do now. How to support him without setting him on the defensive—yet another thing she knows all too much about. She’ll consult with the others. They’ll devise a solution, somehow. Or, because there aren’t always solutions, at least the start of a remedy, a way forward. Perhaps help Steven to find a healthy outlet, until they can coax him into that same communication he’d always encouraged in others…
For now, though, Pearl stands. Dawn can’t be far-off now, and Steven rises early, these days.
She wants to be there when he does.

Pearl [.] is the only Gem Garnet has ever known possessing the ability to make completely serious determined proclamations while near-desperately clinging to someone’s arm.
.
7
The turquoise carbon cloud creature needs a wider variety of sulfates in its atmosphere to keep its density within healthy levels, and far less rapidly oxidising material than what Aventurine claims - so pearl provides, and says nothing. The several generations of marshland flora prone to fascinating microscopic branching disagree with the mulch Aventurine keeps having made for them, and Pearl can feel the sting start up in the (soft, weak, pliable) gem all the way on the back of her neck when she opens the packaging: far, far too acidic. She skims and steals foam from the bubbling infusion that would surely kill the angry red-thorned root it was originally concocted for and fixes the ratios and keeps buying them all time.
[.] She indulges in gleefully spiteful thoughts about the nosedive Aventurine’s reputation is bound to take once she’s gone - but then she remembers that this would mean the death of so many she’s cared for for so long, and she feels improper, forbidden, but above all frustrated tears prick at her eyes.
She wants to leave something, a trace of herself behind, even if it’s the last thing a proper pearl is supposed to do - and maybe, if she plans carefully enough, works quickly and discreetly enough, she can do just that for whichever pearl comes to take her place, and give her a chance to save some of them, if she dares.
.
10
“Well, it’s good to have you back, however strange the situation might be at the moment. We always were best as a set.” Yellow nods sagely. “I assume your return means your Diamond won’t be having you do any more bizarre things.”
“He’s not… she… I wasn’t ordered to do anything!” Pearl is quick to snap back, as it is a sore point that’s been prodded far too much recently, and an argument she’s had with so many over the centuries - including herself. Especially herself. But then she remembers hands pressed over her mouth, gentle as flower petals but immovable as stone, and, well - if she can’t be honest with her current company and hope they understand that particular situation, who ever will? “That’s… that’s not quite true. There was… one thing.”
One thing with all the weight of the world, pressing down - now gone.
“But you know what? I decided that I didn’t like it, and that it was wrong. Certainly, considering the problems it was causing us, there had been a miscalculation and oversight on… Pink Diamond’s part.” Pearl’s voice drops to an even lower, even more conspiratorial whisper - even though they are perfectly alone and disregarded as only pearls get to be, and her audience is already captivated by her talk of a diamond’s fallibility. “So I disobeyed a direct order.”
[.] It was fear filling her at first, when she at long last managed to let Steven know the secret - a terror of it finally, finally coming to light, the magnitude of what it would mean for him, for all of them, as well as a much more dense, personal, selfish fear of how their perception of her would change. Then the most potent relief she’d ever known, warring with endless regret and frustration with herself because she hadn’t managed to tell them all sooner. Because she’d failed when it had been so important, when it could have saved them so much pain (but she fights that down and stashes it away again and again - the could haves and should haves and desperate whys are for some other Pearls to deal with)
[.] pride.
She did it, after all. She figured it out, and she did it! The terrifying renegade pearl, the quickest thinker of the notorious Rebellion, a whirlwind with both a sharp blade and a sharp mind, and armed with a willingness to use them - finding a loophole and throwing off the yoke thought to be baked into her very nacre, a fundamental limitation of her gem type that made so many so very complacent and so very careless in their dealings with pearls. And if she could share it, if she could encourage it in others…
She’s imagined running away often enough in her life. Clever warp skipping. Bluffing all the way to the Crystal System. Stealing away on a ship bound for the Earth’s wilderness, or just stealing one outright.
This, she imagines, feels almost as good.
“Tell us how.”
She’s never heard Blue be this demanding. There is a new dimension to the looks she and Yellow both have fixed on her, and a new weight. So she rushes to oblige.
“Well… it was a rather interesting workaround, if I do say so myself. And quite… situational. But the finer points will take some explaining. Luckily,” Pearl allows some of that age-old disgust at being reduced to idle hallway ornamentation to seep through, “we seem to find ourselves with plenty of time on our hands.” -

“She was saying some really mean things to you. And about you,” Steven piped up again and Pearl figured a shrug and I’ve heard much worse wouldn’t be the right thing to offer here. Thankfully, he continued before she even had a chance to speak up at all. “I wanted to make sure you knew she was wrong.”
“Oh, Steven,” she extricated her hand and pulled him into a hug. “I know. I promise, I know.”
.
“I don’t think it sounds like a very nice place.”There was no need to specify what he was talking about, of course. Pearl thought of the splendour and the grandeur and everything that stood behind it - and everything Rose had very emphatically claimed to not miss at all, ever. “It was… very beautiful, Steven. Very grand. But no, I guess it wasn’t very nice. Nor has it changed for the better, according to what Lapis Lazuli had to say.”
.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”“I…” She wanted to say you weren’t ready and you’re too young and it’s all in the past, but instead she bit her tongue and opted for forcing out the truth. It was the least she could do, really, and he deserved it, and there was hardly any harm left to be done now. “I didn’t want you to think… differently of me.”
Maybe it had been selfish of her - she knew plenty of things over the years had been. But Steven started fidgeting again in that way that let her know he had more questions - and ones he was sure she wouldn’t like him asking. But she’d promised herself and promised them both she’d do her best, and that was what she fully intended.
“What Peridot said - did… did mom… own you?”
Pearl couldn’t help but cringe at the word, dug up again. It made her think of how long it had taken her to shake off some of its more insidious claws, and the effort it had taken to fully accept that if things happened to be a certain way on Homeworld it didn’t mean they had to be that way. It felt surprising - in a good way, perhaps - to see just how ingrained that belief had become in her, and how ridiculous so much of what Peridot was spouting at them had immediately been. She was proving to be a good test, if nothing else, and a stretching of figurative muscles that had lain mostly dormant for millennia, as isolated as they’d all been.
But Steven had asked a question.
“For a while, formally, yes. But she refused to act like it. Always bucking convention, full of radical ideas… your mother was truly something else, Steven.”

Summary
What most people end up noticing first is either the beautiful Sapphire walking in the centre of the procession, or the intimidating Quartzes accompanying her.
Anakin’s eye is firstly drawn to the pearl.-
Bookmark Notes:
“Hello!” Stuttered Anakin, trying to hide his startlement.
The pearl was silent long enough that Anakin wondered if she would answer at all, but eventually she did.
“Hello.”
Her voice was very soft and melodic.
She doesn’t say anything further and Anakin doesn’t know what to say to this creature who isn’t organic nor a droid, but something unknown. Anakin knows about pearls now, about the hushed whispers of someone who knows someone who knows someone who has smuggled a pearl into republic space. Knows how no one can quite agree whether they are sentient or not, whether they are closer to droids or to slaves, but how every petty crime lord in Tatooine would wish to have one. A status symbol of the highest kind. A proof that even the hallowed Gem Empire space isn’t out of reach from this crime lord’s power
Anakin is just one of the thousands human slaves in Tatooine, practically worthless compared to this creature, who by all logic should not be standing in Watto’s little junk shop.
.
It had been Shmi who had convinced Watto to allow the pearl to leave the junkshop and reside in the slave-quarters for the nights, despite Watto’s dismissive “She doesn’t need to sleep.”In their little home, the pearl became Pearl to Anakin.
“Do you miss Homeworld?”
“…Yes. My Emerald was kind, and from her home I could see the Diamond Palace when waiting for her during her meetings.”
She showed a projection from her gem, slightly distorted and flickering, of Homeworld’s skyline with its tall structures, as seen through a window high above.
“And there were other pearls who would stand there with me.”
“I’m sorry those pirates stole you.” Anakin shuffled closer to Pearl. They were both sitting on the small sleeping nook of the Skywalker home residence, Pearl telling stories of the Gem Empire to Anakin. The small boy wrapped his short child-arms around the very narrow green waist and snuggled close. His mother had made sure that her son would not forget what a gentle touch of comfort felt like, and Anakin still believed in the power of solidarity amongst the slaves.
“It hardly matters now. I was on a transport to be harvested, so I would not have ever seen my Emerald again either way.” Pearl placed one light hand on top of Anakin’s head, playing with the human’s hair slightly. She seemed to be confused by this organic’s ease of touching her, but she did not seem displeased.
It was okay. Hugging Pearl still felt a bit weird, as she was not warm and squishy like mom, but she was a friend and it didn’t matter what species your friends were, friends were meant to be hugged.
“What does it mean to be harvested?”
Pearl hesitated. “It means…”
“It means like what happened to Shira Moonchaser.” Shmi interjected appearing from behind a corner, touching Pearl gently on her shoulder. They were close, in the constricts that slaves ever could be, Anakin’s mother and Pearl. They also liked to hug often and touch each other in passing.
Anakin understood. One day Shira had been there and then she hadn’t. Pearl was defective, Pearl was cracked, and now there was a new Pearl serving her Emerald in the nice house with the big window up high where you could see the city. Just like if Anakin became defective, there would be a new slave in Watto’s junkshop oiling the machines.
“Oh. Would you rather have been harvested, than sold to Watto?”
Pearl took her time to think, while still playing with Anakin’s hair.
“I am glad that I have met you, Anakin and Shmi.”
“Okay.” Anakin said, accepting the answer as it was. He had been born a slave, he understood what Pearl meant.
Anakin and Shmi taught Pearl the secret language of the slaves and in exchange Pearl taught them some of the secret language of the pearls. Pearls did not have their own spoken language, like the slaves in Tatooine did, but they had a different system. Pearls had hundreds of resting positions that they were supposed to adopt when not in use, and your choice of a position could tell your fellow pearls many things. Then they also had a system of talking with their hands, small fluttering gestures of fingers that would be seen as nothing more than the usual nervousness and flutterings of pearls. They were small fragile things, they fluttered about.
The position of your fingers, the placement of your feet, they could all be used to communicate. A warning, an expression of solidarity, of grief, of encouragement. She is on a bad mood today. My mistress is planning to betray yours. You are in danger. I’m sorry for your loss. She is a shatterer. She is lying. Older pearls who had served for millennia and saw each other regularly standing on hallways could fit complicated messages into their movements.

If Rose came back now, Pearl wouldn’t fall into her arms. She doesn’t know what she would do, and it leaves her unsteady. The anger seems like it could swallow her whole, sometimes, and in those moments she thinks about how she should have been angry this whole time.
After Spinel, Pearl talks to her friends. She copes.

“Was it terrifying for you? Being new again?”
If she’s honest… “Not really. When I was first formed, I was all by myself. This time, I had all of you around. Greg paid attention to me. Steven cared enough to come find me when I wandered off. It was…I wish it had been like that the first time, but I’m glad I have those memories.” She runs through the events of the day in her head. “I can super understand why it wouldn’t be that way for you, though.”
Pearl nods. “There’s something I want to talk to Greg about, but…I kind of also never want to see him again. After he saw me like that.”
“I get it, P, but you can’t avoid Greg forever.” Amethyst put a reassuring hand on Pearl’s back at her heavy sigh. “From what I remember, all he cared about was keeping us safe and getting our memories back.”
Pearl collapses a little, then, and Amethyst takes the excuse to fold Pearl into her arms. Pearl clings, sobs hitching in her throat. “We were becoming friends,” Pearl says. “What if he liked me better like that?”
Amethyst pulls back just so she can look Pearl in the eyes as she says “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.”
Pearl’s shoulders relax a fraction as she laughs, and when Amethyst stands up to go back to the temple, Pearl stands too.
.
“Was Rose ever…unkind to you?”It seems like the kind of question Greg ought to take a moment to think about, so he does. “She kept a lot of secrets from me. To an extent, I understood that, and accepted it but…do you really want to know?”
Without looking at him, Pearl nods.
“I love Steven more than anything, Pearl, anything. You know that. But when Rose told me that she was having him…I hadn’t even known that she could do that. If she’d asked me if I wanted to have a kid, if I was ready to be a dad…I would have said no. But she didn’t give me a say. When things like that happened, when she was…incommunicative, I always chalked it up to a cultural thing. But since I’ve gotten to know the rest of you better…I know that it isn’t. You and Garnet and Amethyst have kept secrets from me, yeah, but not just so you’d get your way. Not like she did.” He pauses. Pearl is unreadable, still turned away from him with her arms crossed. “Is that the kind of thing you were asking about?”
She nods.
“Steven told me what happened to Spinel.”
At that, Pearl flinches. “Spinel didn’t deserve that,” she says, and Greg has no idea if she’s only talking about Spinel.
Either way… “No, she didn’t.”
.
Pearl will be staring at the picture of Rose that hangs next to the door. If Garnet waits another minute, Pearl will draw her spear and throw it at the picture, breaking the frame beyond repair and tearing the picture itself. She’ll be flooded with guilt and inconsolable over it, and still she’ll try to choke it down, try to characterize her anger as some personal inadequacy.Garnet walks out of the temple in time and heads straight for her, gathering her into a hug. Pearl goes almost limp in her arms, as if relieved that she hadn’t done what she’d been about to do. She’s crying, pointlessly trying to keep Garnet from seeing. Garnet tightens her hold and Pearl’s arms snake around her waist, and they stay like that for a long while.
“I don’t know if I love her anymore,” Pearl whispers, as if she doesn’t really want Garnet to hear.
“You don’t have to love her.” Garnet puts on her most authoritative voice to say it, lacing the words with the weight of her belief that it’s true.
**
If Rose came back now, Pearl wouldn’t fall into her arms. She doesn’t know what she would do, and it leaves her unsteady. The anger seems like it could swallow her whole, sometimes, and in those moments she thinks about how she should have been angry this whole time.
She should have been angry when Rose pushed Pearl’s hands over her lips, guaranteeing her secret would stay hers alone to keep, but all she’d felt then was the softness of Rose’s touch on her hands and the sting of Rose’s distrust, a small, pitiful wish that Rose hadn’t felt the need to use magic to keep her silent.
She should have been angry every time Rose almost left her, every time she expected Pearl to be passive and encouraging as she gushed about some new human. She’s only hated herself, back then, for not being enough to satisfy Rose.
She should have been angry when Rose had asked her to stay and fight for earth – the moment she realized that Rose only ever asked her questions that she already knew the answer to.

Pearl would imagine throwing herself in front of Garnet, and telling her the truth. The whole of it.
It’s my fault, mine! I’m the reason they’re gone! I faked Pink Diamond’s death, this was all vengeance on behalf of a Gem that’s whole and well—
But she’d choke on her own words.
Garnet would notice. No matter how lost she was in her visions, sooner or later, she always noticed. And she, or Ruby and Sapphire, would wrap an arm or two around Pearl’s slender frame, and rub her back, an offer of silent comfort. Even though they didn’t understand what precisely they were comforting her for, Pearl would accept, and offer comfort back.
Later, she decided, this was for the best. What consolation would the truth have given Garnet? Either way, their friends were all gone.
.
She wasn’t sure if she’d ever be able to take him into space— they had no working ships left, none at all.
She could tell him about it, though. Not just these generalities. About the other planets she’d seen, the space systems she’d flown through. The radiant colours of nebulae, planets that were covered entirely in oceans, floating cities which could only be built where gravity was only a fraction of Earth’s.
… but she’d seen all of that in service to the Diamond Authority.
There were ways around the binding, of course. Pearl was clever. She knew she could be vague in the right places, direct the focus of the descriptions. Those tales wouldn’t have to risk Rose’s secret.
But what if Steven asked? What if Amethyst did, or— or Garnet? No, Garnet wouldn’t, she’d always respected Pearl’s reluctance to speak about her past, but the other two—
Pearl didn’t know what would happen, and it scared her.
.
“I saw the traitorous Rose Quartz shatter Pink Diamond with my own eye!”
Pearl’s hands flew to her mouth automatically. She wasn’t even planning to say something, but the thought of That’s not what happened was still enough to trigger it.
.
Of course, even if she could speak, she wouldn’t have done so there, surrounded by enemy Rubies. That was something she’d have chosen to share in private. Just for her family, as Steven would have called them.
But it wasn’t a choice, was it?
.
Her memories swam with protocols for questioning, trials, imprisonment and executions. There should be time to get to him before he was shattered, but...
-but what if those protocols had changed? What if, when confronted by an ‘assassin’, the Diamonds rushed immediately to the harshest punishment?
If only Steven knew. If only Pearl had told him. She had no idea if it really would have helped, if he would have believed her, or the Diamonds would have believed him, or what the fallout would have been be if they had. But surely anything, anything, would be better than this.
This is my fault, she thought, eyes misting up so violently she couldn’t see the tools in front of her.
And then: No. This is Pink Diamond’s.
Later, when Steven tore away from her, tears running down his face, oblivious to the words Pearl was choking on, she thought: No. Rose’s fault.
.
After it was all done, Pearl felt untethered.
Something around her throat had loosened. For millennia, she’d always been bound to someone. Now, that final pink rope had been cut, and she felt like a human boat with a broken sail, slack and directionless.

They see the major stories, the events that will shake the universe to its foundations - change lives, history, paradigms themselves. But they see the little moments, too - the pauses in-between, the small moments that turn History into stories. They are all equally important in the eyes of Uatu, The Watcher, and he records them as such.
