Everything they had tried, failed. They had all failed. His luck with first contact had failed at the worst possible time. The blast from a mysterious weapon sends everything spiraling, and it's all he can do to shut his eyes tight and endure.
but when he next opens his eyes he's his four year old self in the aftermath of a sleepover with his (dead) older brother, Sam. And before he can react even /begin/ to react to the situation, he's already having a medical emergency. Yay.

Jim had lived most of his life alone. Family didn’t mean much to him. People who shared the same blood, the same DNA, who were supposed to be his family had never cared about him, so why should he care about them?
It was only when he joined Starfleet that Jim found people that he truly wanted to care about: Pike, Bones, Gaila. And then later, when Vulcan was destroyed, and Jim somehow ended up as Captain of the Enterprise: Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, Uhura, and Spock, even if he didn’t care about Jim the same.
They were his family; the ones he had chosen. He did not need or want anyone else. Marriage and children? They were not for Jim. He wasn't built for that. He would live and die among the stars, exploring the universe aboard the Enterprise, his home.
Unfortunately, the universe had other plans for Jim.
Namely, marriage and children.
