Clu planned to get rid of the User entirely to get Flynn's attention but there is a more twisted alternative that can easily get Clu the Creator's disc and Sam was that piece on the chessboard that can lead to victory. “Don't!” Tron snapped at him, pulling Beck's hand down low and to the side. He squeezed Beck's wrist tighter, wishing he could make him let go of the disc, drop it to the ground. “Don't act like you don't know what I became! What I did! I tried to kill you, Beck. Clu didn't even have to make it an order.”
“I know,” Beck choked out the words, wishing he didn't have to address this now.

When Rinzler chases after Sam and Quorra from the lightcycle arena, his second baton isn't another lightcycle, it's a jet, and he's able to pursue Sam into the Outlands. The chase doesn't end well for anyone, and Sam and Rinzler find themselves swept out to the edge of the system. They must form an uneasy alliance to get back to the city, and neither of them are happy about it. But as they travel, Sam begins to unravel some of the tangled strings of code that make his unwanted companion, and discovers that there's more to this program than a killing machine.
