Ron has never even seen a walker up close like this before and now he can feel them whenever their steps get too jumbled up and they brush his shoulder. He can hear their mouths working, the rotted teeth and cracked jaws clanking together every so often. The sound alone is making the hair on his arms rise and there’s a cold sweat dripping down his neck.
He’s never been this nervous in his life and he’s not jealous. Not jealous of Carl, who’s in front of him gripping his Mom's hand. He’s not jealous of the boy who has a resigned look on his face, who’s only glancing around when he has to. It’s stupid— why would he want to be like Carl? The younger boy— and he is younger, that Ron knows, has probably seen more crazy shit than this in the life he’s lived on the outside.
