Summary

However, your captor’s insistence on feeding you from his favourite restaurants presents you with an opportunity for escape. Forced into conversation with him, you realise killers aren’t born, they’re made, and you have a lot in common with this one. Acting as therapist, you try to help your captor resist his compulsions to kill, while resisting mounting urges of your own. Forced into his world of restaurants and murder, you must tread a careful line between protecting and implicating yourself, until you’re once again free of your restraints.

Not just the murders, but the real shit. The vulnerable shit. Sam told him so much; about his father, about his abuse, about his ex-wife and the kids and feelings. Things he’s never told anyone, things he can hardly admit to himself but he shared it so freely to a man who was never intent on listening in the first place and now Sam is openly sobbing, and the chain jingles as he pulls his legs up to his chest and wraps his arms around his knees, in the very bed where Alan used to lay.
It still smells like him, and that’s the worst part, being haunted by everything that could’ve been, except not really because it’s all just a fantasy in his head. He tried so hard to ignore the reality in front of him, because he needed to believe he could actually make this work.

Alan rubs his forehead, steadfastly ignoring the more frantic struggling from their added guest. The headache now fully prominent, distracting him from his more reasonable, logical thought and now all his can think of is Sam in a straitjacket and his stomach turns.
In a situation where there were no right answers, Sam ending up like that was the worst one. He was trying to be better, had proved he could be, and now he was was asking, backward and desperate as it may be, for what could be the most important therapy session of his life.
