The "Weird Sisters" series is very well-written and gripping, with 3 very short stories leading up to this AU and in-depth exploration of the summer before and the first few months of Buffy's senior year in High School. It turns out that Janet Fraiser is Joyce's younger half-sister, reunited after the end of BtVS season 2 through the good offices of General Hammond, in time for Janet and SG1 to help find Buffy in LA quite quickly and reunite her with her family.
This 4th story, "Shelter" is by far the longest (153k words) and most involved, with the SGC personnel making some serious miscalculations at the start as they try to put some pressure on Xander and Willow to talk about the (no doubt ALIEN) things that go bump in the night in Sunnydale. One happy result of this almost deadly screw-up is that Joyce gets custody of both teens.

Meanwhile, Buffy stays with her father in L.A. and does some soul-mending volunteer work, but still meets "Lily" (formerly "Chanterelle" and later "Anne Steele" in canon, born "Georgette" in this story, having been named for her uncle in the Air Force) during a visit to Helen's Kitchen, . . . only this time there's military and ex-military help available (thanks to General Hammond's need to make it up to her, and the ex-military connections to her old diner job) and it turns out that the hell dimension Buffy is liberating is actually more like an alien naquadah mine in a time dilation field, with some Ancient and Goa'uld tech, so it's probably a good thing that SG1 is so determined to help out and get back on Buffy's good side.
Of course, that's only the first half of the story. There's still a bunch of rogue Watchers led by Quentin Travers who are in league with some evil NID/Trust types and are determined to eliminate Buffy and her entire support system under the guise of an early cruciamentum. Oh, and Joyce pretty much adopts Faith and a returned Marcie Ross, as well, at least until Faith's birth father shows up. :)
