Summary
In the aftermath of Known Unknown, Emma and Alyssa have gained an unprecedented following. Their restaurant has an out-the-door waiting time every morning, not to mention the fact that private rooms are booked months in advance.
The spotlight has been nice, and it's helped them get their feet under them, especially Emma, in wake of the tragedy that rocked them to their cores. Now, they hear from fans every day, all of them expressing their gratitude, telling their stories.
From there, an idea was born, a tiny glimmer of hope that sparked into something much bigger. And soon, Emma and Alyssa pitched it to Tom Hawkins, Food Network producer: the Unruly Hearts' Club, a little beach hangout spot where all are welcome in walking distance to the Indiana Dunes, hopefully the first of many casual dining spots to be well-known and openly welcoming.
Now, it's just a matter of seeing if the network will go for it, and they'll get picked up for their show which will follow the couple-- and their friends, who make up a newly formed restaurant management group-- as they build their second restaurant from the ground up.

The feeling started small, just a tiny pit at the bottom of her stomach. But the further the day went on the bigger it grew until Alyssa sat in AP History, her final class of the day feeling ready to throw up at any moment. She didn’t understand, she didn’t get sick often and when she did she usually had a headache and was cold; today she was queasy and had shed her coat and jumper earlier in the day despite it being early spring and all her peers were shivering in their seats.

It wasn't that werewolf and human relationships were illegal, it's just that they were frowned upon by a lot of people. The human was called a "dog-fucker" and "zoophile." The werewolf was called a "beast" and "bitch in heat." Despite all of this, Alyssa and Emma were three years strong and didn't have any intentions on breaking apart what they had.
But when a string of murders runs rampant through the city, they have to try to bring their respective races together before they rip each other to shreds.
After all, nothing is more romantic than solving a murder mystery and ending a race war!

Summary
As far as best friends go, Alyssa and Kaylee's home-lives couldn't be more different.
For example, Alyssa’s mother, ever controlling, opens all of her packages because she’s still technically a minor, and she wants to know her business. She also always double bolts the door.
Stacie, Kaylee’s mom, on the other hand, stacks everything by the kitchen counter, couldn’t care less what her daughter orders as long as there’s no criminal activity attached to it, and she always leaves the apartment door unlocked so that Kaylee and her friends can get in without any hassle.
These are several of the reasons why she elects to order Emma’s birthday present to the apartment when the time comes, giving Kaylee a perfectly good excuse to tell her mom: that she always orders food to her house, and must have forgotten to change the address.
(Or, the one where Kaylee's mom locks the door for once; the one where Alyssa really just wants to pick up her girlfriend's birthday present; the one where she has to break into her best friend's house. The one with the consensual burglary.)

“My island is so booooooring,” Alyssa complains, flopping down on the couch next to Emma, switch in hand.
“You got the game yesterday,” her girlfriend reminds good naturedly for possibly the fortieth time that day, but she does lift her arm, making room for Alyssa to cuddle against her. “You can’t call it boring when it doesn’t even have a shop yet. Or a museum. Or nice flowers.”
“That’s exactly why it’s boring, Emma,” Alyssa replies, holding up her game. “See! Doesn’t it look boring?”
Emma eyes the screen with suspicion, observing the fact that nobody even has a built house yet, and there doesn’t seem to be any sign of work happening.
“Okay, I’ll admit—”
“You think it’s boring!” Alyssa laughs, satisfaction clear. “And your game—”
“I’ve played for almost four hundred hours, ‘Lys," she tells her, but Alyssa still pouts, snuggling against her; Emma rolls her eyes before smiling, as she thinks of a solution. “Do you want to come to my island?”

Alyssa hums as she puts her final touches on her, Kaylee, and Shelby’s computational physics presentation. It’s their final project for the class, and the teacher had let them pick their groups, so naturally, they’d gravitated together.
After their show of support for the second prom, Alyssa found a way to forgive and connect with the two girls, even acquiring the true sense of friendship that their little group lacked before.
She smiles at the thought, glueing the one of the last letters onto the posterboard when her phone rings. Her eyes light up further when she recognizes the tone. Her two friends look on in confusion when she drops everything to answer.

The lights were on, which meant she hadn’t meant to fall asleep. Even in her slumber the girl looked wrecked. She looked more peaceful than what Alyssa assumed she looked like awake, but she still looked pained. Weighted. Hurt.
Alyssa knocked on the window before she could chicken out. Seeing Emma like that was breaking her heart, she wasn’t sure she could stand it. Emma awoke with a start and stared at her. Then she was up in a flash to open the window.

Baking had always, without fail, been the one thing that had been able to still every idea or fear that passed into her conscious. She’d relied on it through elementary school when bullying had gotten the better of her, when her father left before even saying goodbye. The first time she’d stepped into a kitchen wasn’t long after her fifth birthday, her mother had taught her everything she knew, and Alyssa often pinned that as the one good thing the pushy parent had done, only slightly in jest. She might have pushed her to breaking point during High School and led her to run herself bone dry with the amount of extracurriculars she partook in, but she also gave her the skills she needed to immerse herself in her one sanctuary. It was her therapy, her one relief, the thing she liked most in the world and probably her first love. Though it wasn’t working now, not when her life had ended up so hopeless that she needed it more than she ever had before. She still baked of course, it was basically her job and even if it didn’t provide the usual respite, she still enjoyed it.

Once more, her gaze moves back to the treehouse, can almost still see Kaylee perched on the edge of the platform, can almost feel fingers dancing down the back of her wrist, a pinky linking with hers. She shivers despite herself, despite knowing that she hasn’t seen her ex-best friend in so long she doesn’t know if ex-best friend is the sort of thing that even still applies, despite remembering the exact feeling of having Kaylee’s chin hooked over her shoulder.
She swallows hard, ripping herself from the imaginary grasp.
It is not the time to think of what could have been. It is not the time to wonder. It is not the time to think of anything but looking good, but showing everybody how much she’s changed, but making new memories of JMHS and leaving old ones behind.
