Summary
For better or worse, Alyssa believes in God.
She’s unsure if it’s because of how she was raised, or if it’s simply a side effect of growing up in Edgewater, but much of her early years are dominated by church and Sunday School.
It’s ingrained in her that nothing could be worse than being seen as a sinner in the eyes of God, that worship is a wholesome endeavor, that being a good Christian matters.
So, Alyssa tries to be good, tries to say thanks for what she has been given, to keep her head down and never step a toe out of line.
For the first part of her life, there was never a reason to challenge any of the rules she set out for herself, any of the rules her mother or the church seemed adamant about, but, things change.
Alyssa grows older, and her existence doesn’t seem like it has a plan at all; she finds herself looking to build her own life for the very first time. She finds that worship doesn’t just have to happen at the altar, that perhaps the greatest form of it is that little thing called falling in love.
(Or, a study of Alyssa's relationship with religion and how it changes before, during, and after canon.)

“Which friends?” Alyssa asks curiously.
“Narcissus and the gang,” Barry answers flippantly.
Alyssa stares at him, trying to put the pieces together.
“You know, Narcissus? Zazz? Genie? Zef? Swan?” He groans. “Has your mother taught you nothing?”

Everyone made fun of Emma, and if she realized this, she never did anything about it. She just went about her life, getting her ears pulled on and feathers torn out and slurs called her way. She had no choice, as this was the life of a hybrid. Forever and always.
But when a kindhearted peacock pheasant Avem and a bold butterfly Cimex, as well as a motherly duo of teachers, come along, Emma is shown kindness for the first time in her life. And she cherishes it, even if it all bleeds out through her claws in the end.

There’s something absolutely suffocating about the quiet. It’s deafening in its emptiness, cold and impersonal in its conduct, enveloping the good moments and seeping further into the ones that almost hurt too much to bear.
But things change, and as she grows older, as she falls in love, she finds that perhaps the solitude of it was only a precursor to a brilliant, gorgeous existence where the moments between the lines and the pauses before a new sentence are the times where love is shifting from its most liminal form to its most sure.
This takes long for Alyssa to truly understand, though. It takes years of attempting to become one with the silence, of trying to blend in, before she realizes that in order to appreciate the quiet, she must first learn to scream.

If she could stay normal when Kaylee sat on her lap, or lifted her in cheer practice, or kissed her on the cheek, why couldn't Emma? Shelby was just being reasonable. Safe. And Emma wasn't. Worse, she had chosen it. And it made Shelby furious.
