Being Fit
by NerdiethingsAn absolute GEM holy shit how do I even describe this?? Firstly let's start with Wii Fit Trainer: The starting chapters that follow her POV are so fun to read, taking a blank-slate protagonist and making a story about discovering oneself when one struggles to even HAVE a self. This all gets set into the rich, varied context of the Super Smash Bros world, where all these video game properties are somehow in the same universe and interacting. Though the bombastic style and personalities of the games are all maintained, at the same time there's consideration given to every character, imbuing even the most sidenote characters with depth and nuance, and the connections between worlds (politics, economics, warfare) are also written with such loving detail and creativity that makes every chapter and every scene feel like a spotlight. I'll especially note there's some extremely juicy Legend of Zelda lore development where Zelda plays a FASCINATING somewhat antagonistic role while Ganon is going through a slow-burn redemption arc (facilitated by none other than Isabelle from Animal Crossing), and there's some great political/cultural worldbuilding in regards to the Gerudo and Ganon's motivations.
I binged this with enthusiasm and a thrill for the weaving of all sorts of characters. It sometimes gets to be a lot to keep track of, but as someone who is familiar with Nintendo but not a heavy/obscure lore expert, I still felt capable of keeping up with most of it, as most characters get at least a little introduction to help orient you as to their personality, their role in their canon world, and how that's being applied to this mixed-canon Super Smash Bros world.
